Serengeti National Park

With sprawling grasslands and the annual wildebeest migration, the Serengeti exemplifies for many the very image of an African safari

Though the northern region of the park draws significant crowds, particularly during the migration seasons, this surge in tourism sometimes compromises the quietude of the environment. For a more exclusive experience, we recommend the southern sector around Ndutu during the wildebeest calving season. Here, the emphasis is on observing the early life cycles of the herd in a setting that is less frequented.

Adjacent to the Serengeti are several noteworthy reserves and conservancies—Grumeti Game Reserve, Singita Lamai, and Mwiba Wildlife Reserve—that offer distinctive advantages. These areas provide a less crowded alternative to the main park and permit a wider array of activities, including night drives and guided bush walks, which are generally restricted within the Serengeti. Moreover, they operate with an emphasis on conservation and community engagement, thereby offering not just an exclusive experience but also the opportunity to contribute to responsible tourism and ecological sustainability.

Best Time To Visit: Serengeti National Park

For visits featuring clear skies and maximum wildlife visibility, the period from June to October is recommended. However, those seeking an opportunity to witness the calving season may find the post-rain months from December to March to be ideal, offering scenes of new life set against verdant landscapes, minus the typical tourist influx.

Activities

Serengeti National Park offers a range of engaging activities beyond the traditional vehicle-bound game drives. Walking safaris allow you to establish a closer connection with the terrain, and they are often conducted near small, movable camps. This on-the-ground approach enables an immersive exploration of the area’s geological origins, rooted in the East African Rift, and its cultural history, marked by Maasai pastoralist traditions.

Conservation Projects

Pioneering conservation projects, such as the Serengeti Ecosystem Development and Conservation Project, are in place to ensure the long-term sustainability of this natural sanctuary. Additionally, the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) focuses on critical aspects of wildlife management and threat mitigation. These efforts are often augmented by partnerships with local organizations like the Grumeti Fund, which focus on creating a sustainable relationship between the local communities and the natural world.
