The Greater Mwiba Protected Wildlife Area covers roughly 2,000 square kilometres of northern Tanzania, close to eight per cent of the wider Serengeti and Ngorongoro ecosystems, and works as a buffer along their southern boundary. The land is held in private protection for wildlife and low-volume tourism. Traversing rights carry guests further still, into Maswa Game Reserve, where dry riverbeds hold permanent water and lion and leopard densities are high, and out onto the southern grass plains.
Guests reach Mwiba Plains on scheduled light aircraft, with airstrip transfers included, and a helipad can be arranged in advance. The last leg is a game drive in itself, roughly an hour from the reserve’s airstrip across open plains before camp appears in the grass. Serengeti National Park lies to the north, and the herds move between the park and the private reserve through the season. The park’s rules stop at the boundary, and on this side vehicles leave the tracks and drives carry on after dark.
After dark, spotlit drives turn up bushbabies, hyenas and hunting leopards.
A private vehicle and guide mean a morning can go to one cheetah and her cubs, or run out to the far edge of the reserve with a picnic lunch in the back. Sundowners are set up wherever the light is best. After dark, spotlit drives turn up bushbabies, hyenas and hunting leopards. The reserve’s scouts read the ground from the vehicle: tracks at a spring, a kill cached in a tree. Cultural visits in the wider Mwiba area include time with Hadzabe hunter-gatherers, and with Datoga families known for beaten copper and beadwork.
Two tented rooms and the family unit can be taken together as an exclusive block, a self-contained group of three within the larger camp, suited to multi-generational groups travelling together. Children from four are welcome, the youngest sharing a tent with an adult. Meals move with the day: breakfast out on the plains, lunch under a tree, dinner outside by lamplight or in the private dining area. Drinks, unlimited game drives, cultural visits and airstrip transfers are all included.
