Mahale Mountains

Stretching against the backdrop of Lake Tanganyika, Mahale Mountains are home to a unique congregation of wildlife, headlined by the iconic chimpanzees

Lake Tanganyika, bordering the mountains, holds its own set of marvels. As one of Africa’s Great Lakes, it not only adds to the region’s scenic beauty but is also a treasure trove of aquatic biodiversity. Its waters are home to numerous endemic fish species, and its shores, with golden sands meeting the clear blue waters, are a sight to behold.

In terms of the indigenous history of the region, the Tongwe people have lived here for generations, their lives intricately woven with the rhythms of the land. However, modern challenges threaten their traditional way of life. External influences, coupled with pressures from expanding settlements and resource extraction, have brought their rights into focus. Initiatives such as Tongwe Trust are now in place to ensure the protection of their cultural heritage and traditional territories.

Best Time To Visit: Mahale Mountains

The best time to visit Mahale Mountains is between June and October, during the dry season. This period is particularly favorable for observing chimpanzees as the fruits they favor are abundant at lower altitudes. Because these primates have a tendency to minimize effort when food is readily available, they are generally found closer to the base of the mountains during these months. As the supply of these preferred fruits diminishes, the chimpanzees are more likely to venture to higher altitudes in search of food, making them less accessible for observation.

Connectivity and logistics

For optimal convenience, most guests opt for a charter flight that lands directly at the Mahale airstrip. This method provides the most direct and time-efficient way to reach the destination. Alternatively, for those looking for a more adventurous approach, it is feasible to kayak from Kigoma to Mahale, a journey that takes approximately five days. This option includes camping at various points along the route and offers an in-depth experience of the Lake Tanganyika shoreline. Both methods of travel have their merits, and the choice ultimately depends on your personal preferences and time constraints.
