The Retreats at Namiri Plains are two private villas on the open grasslands of the eastern Serengeti, set along the Ngare Nanyuki River in Tanzania. Each comes with its own guide, vehicle, host and chef. A family or a group of friends runs the days entirely on its own clock, following cheetah and lion across country that was closed to visitors for two decades.

That closure was no accident. This corner of the Serengeti was set aside for cheetah research, and the wildlife thickened in the quiet. Underground springs feed the Ngare Nanyuki and hold water the year round. That keeps the plains game, and the predators that follow them, resident on these grasslands regardless of where the wildebeest happen to be at the time.
Each villa holds two full-size en-suite bedrooms, linked by a central lounge and dining room that opens through sliding doors onto a wraparound timber deck. Free-standing bathtubs sit at either end, and a private firepit faces the plains for sundowners. The two Retreats share a pool and lounge kept for their guests alone, a further layer of privacy on top of the main camp’s facilities.

The walls are built from calcrete, a pale stone formed from ancient volcanic ash that keeps the rooms cool through the day and holds their warmth long after dark. The interiors work in muted greys and softwoods, with flashes of yellow drawn from the grass outside. Solar power runs the camp, quietly, throughout its days and nights on the plain.
Namiri sits roughly ninety minutes’ drive east of Seronera, in the quieter eastern half of the Serengeti, and the nearest other camp is over an hour away. That distance shows up directly in the game viewing. Sightings happen without other vehicles jostling for angle, and with a private guide and vehicle attached to each villa, there is no negotiating whose morning it is. The Serengeti Cheetah Project has studied the area’s cheetahs for years, and an evening with a resident researcher explains who is who among the animals crossing the plains.
The land is short-grass plain, broken by acacia and by granite kopjes. One of them is the Soit le Motonyi rock, where breakfast can be laid out with the plains falling away below. Cheetah favour this open ground, and lion and leopard are seen regularly, along with serval and caracal, among them a melanistic serval known locally as Manja. Between November and June, the migration herds move through the wider area, and the predator activity sharpens with them.

Guided walks, permitted for guests aged twelve and up, add a slower reading of the ecosystem, while the private chef sends meals to the deck, to the poolside or out onto the plains as a bush breakfast under the acacias. Nature walks and tracking can be pitched at younger guests, and the villa layout, two bedrooms around a shared living space, suits several generations travelling together without anyone tripping over anyone else.
The team behind Namiri Plains opened the first camp in this protected zone and added the two Retreats in July 2023 as its private wing. Guests keep the run of the main camp’s spa and facilities while holding their own living and dining space apart from it. Bathing outdoors while zebra graze the middle distance, coffee on the deck as the sun clears the horizon, lions audible somewhere in the dark beyond the fire: these are the ordinary rhythms of a stay at The Retreats at Namiri Plains.

Fly from Arusha to Seronera, about an hour and a quarter in the air, and then drive east for between an hour and a half and two hours into country most visitors never touch. The transfer runs as a game drive with your own guide, and because the eastern plains empty of vehicles almost immediately, it often produces the first cheetah of the trip before you have unpacked.
A private charter into Seronera, typically a Cessna Caravan or Pilatus PC-12, tightens the timings if you are connecting from Kilimanjaro the same day. Scheduled flights carry soft bags only, fifteen kilograms a person with hand luggage counted.
Yes. The eastern plains lie beneath the 1,800 metre mark, and mainland Tanzania below that height is rated high risk for malaria by both the UK's official travel health service and the American CDC, so tablets are usually advised for every member of the party, children included at doses a clinic will set.
Make the travel clinic appointment a few weeks before departure so any course can start on time, and let the villa's nets and evening cover do the rest.
Each villa takes four adults in its two en-suite bedrooms, and two extra beds can go in for children, so a family of six closes the door on its own private world. Children are welcome from age five.
With your own guide, vehicle, chef and host, the day is built around the youngest person in it when that helps: short bright morning drives, a swim, an early supper. Taking both villas turns the place into a private camp for a three-generation party, which is exactly how many guests use it.
The villa itself with its dedicated team, every meal cooked by your own chef and served wherever you like, house drinks with only the top-shelf bottles extra, laundry, and the airstrip transfers at each end. Game drives are unlimited in your own vehicle rather than scheduled, which is the real difference from a conventional camp.
Hot-air ballooning and the photographic vehicle are the add-ons worth knowing about, both booked ahead and priced separately, and park fees are charged per person per day on top. Everything goes into a single quote before you commit.
Three at a minimum, and four rewards you. The eastern Serengeti is a slow-burn place: the cheetah of Soit le Motonyi reveal themselves to people who can wait out a morning, and with the villa's own vehicle there is no reason to rush a sighting that is building toward a hunt.
There are also only two villas, so the calendar is tight in the dry months. If your dates are fixed, especially between June and October, tell us early and we will hold the space before the year fills.
Yes, the camp runs wifi and it reaches the guest areas reliably enough for messages, email and sending photographs home. It is satellite internet on the edge of a very empty map, so treat video calls and streaming as a bonus rather than a plan.
Mobile signal on the plains themselves is thin to absent. If you need to stay properly reachable for work, tell us in advance and we will check the current setup with the camp.
