Lamai Serengeti stands high on Kogakuria Kopje, in the far north of the Serengeti, only a few kilometres from the Mara River crossing points where the wildebeest migration turns dramatic between July and October. Twelve open-fronted rooms step up through a tumble of granite boulders, looking north across the plains toward the Lamai Wedge and the Kenyan border beyond.

Then came the decision to commit to a fixed lodge on the kopje, chosen for its height and its year-round reach into the migration route. This is a permanent lodge, not a seasonal camp, and that is what sets it apart. Resident lion, elephant and plains game work the Lamai Wedge long after the migration has moved south, so the viewing holds up well outside the crossing months.
The lodge divides between a main camp and a smaller, exclusive-use camp on the far side of the outcrop, both drawing on the same open-fronted design. The rooms are built from canvas, natural poles and stone, set among the rocks so that each veranda reads as a private lookout over the grasslands. Mosquito netting and canvas roll-downs close against the weather, and otherwise the plains stay in constant view.

Inside, the mood is quiet and pared back, all neutral tones, whitewashed floors and handcrafted furniture, much of it made in Tanzania. A swimming pool is carved into the rocks. A library and map room nod to older habits of exploration, and the main bar carries upcycled Land Rover seats. From bed at night the sounds arrive clearly, lions calling and hyenas whooping, and now and then elephants or buffalo moving through the dark nearby.
The northern Serengeti earns its reputation between July and October, when the migration reaches the Mara River and the herds mass on the banks before crossing. From the kopje, Lamai opens long sightlines over several crossing points, and the game drives track the columns as they build toward the water. This far north, vehicle numbers stay lower than on the busier southern plains, and the boulder-strewn hillsides give the landscape a character all its own, quite unlike open savannah. It is one of the great set pieces of the safari calendar, watched here from height and at a distance from the crowds.
Outside the crossing season, the Lamai Wedge holds strong resident game, and the drives stay full through the green months with leopard, elephant, buffalo and large herds of plains game. Daily 4×4 drives explore the northern plains and the river valley, and when the grass is low enough short guided walks run from camp under the permit arrangements that apply within the national park. Bush breakfasts and sundowners, birdwatching and hot-air balloon flights over the plains can all be arranged, so the days settle around whatever the season offers.

Dining is relaxed and communal, built around fresh ingredients and regional flavours rather than a fixed menu. Meals are taken in the main dining room, out on the deck, or as a picnic during a game drive. Families are looked after too, with two rooms in the main camp pairing a master bedroom with an adjoining twin. The exclusive-use camp goes further, a private, self-contained setting for families and small groups who want their own corner of the kopje, away from the main lodge entirely.
Conservation and community work is channelled through wider initiatives that support education, healthcare and anti-poaching efforts around the camps of northern Tanzania. Most of the staff are Tanzanian, many of them recruited from communities near the park, and a guide-training programme develops local talent for work across the camps. The lodge itself was built with a light footprint, stepped into the boulders and constructed largely from materials sourced within the country.

You fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport on your international flight, and from Arusha nearby we put you on a light aircraft to the Kogatende airstrip in the far northern Serengeti, from where a game drive brings you to camp. We build these connections into your itinerary so the timings line up in a day.
Seats are shared and the exact departure is fixed the day before, once the airline sets its routing, so the final timings firm up close to the day. If you would rather set your own timings, we can arrange a private charter to Kogatende, typically a Cessna Caravan or Pilatus PC-12, timed to your international arrival. Luggage is soft bags only, with a weight limit of around 15 to 20kg depending on the airline, which we confirm with you before you pack.
Yes. The Serengeti sits below 1,800 metres, and current UK guidance from TravelHealthPro treats all of mainland Tanzania below that height as a malaria area. The cooler nights at this altitude reduce the risk compared with the coast, but they do not remove it, so the camps provide screened tents, nets and repellent, and antimalarial tablets and covering up after dark remain the real protection.
Health advice can change from year to year, so we always ask you to confirm the current position with a travel clinic or your doctor before you travel, and to take the usual care against bites after dark.
The Serengeti is warm by day, usually in the low to high twenties, and cooler at night and in the early morning, often in the mid-teens, so dawn drives in an open vehicle feel cold.
Pack light layers with a fleece for early starts, in neutral colours, plus a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and good sunscreen. If you travel in the green season, add a light waterproof; the long rains of March to May are the wettest stretch.
