Before any other camp carried the name, Alex Walker built Serian “The Original.” He chose a forested rise above the Mara River, deep in the Mara North Conservancy, and set the approach that every Serian since has followed. Walker has guided in East Africa for decades, and it shows in the way the camp is run. The scale is small and the guiding is the point.

Away from the national reserve, the rules loosen. Drives carry on after dark and guides walk guests through the bush on foot. A vehicle can leave the track to follow a leopard or a hunting pride. None of this is possible across the boundary in the national reserve. The conservancy holds big cats in high density year-round, and from July to October the great migration moves through the wider Mara.

The thatched mess is open-sided, its lounge and fireplace giving onto a wide deck for sundowners and long lunches above the river. Meals lean toward fresh farmhouse cooking, the vegetables and herbs drawn from the camp’s own shamba. Dinners are laid under the stars or around the fire, the conversation running on the day’s sightings until it is time to turn in.
Serian “The Original” was the first camp in Alex Walker’s collection, and it remains the template for what followed: intimate scale, strong guiding, a classic bush feel with no resort polish. Walker is a guide and filmmaker who has spent his career in East Africa, and the camp still carries his character. Many of the guiding team have been here for years, and it shows in how easily the days come together. A hyena den or a fresh set of tracks becomes a story told back at the fire. It is a working camp with the warmth of somewhere lived-in, never staged for guests.
The tents are vast marquees on hardwood decking, simply and elegantly styled, where hand-woven rugs and carefully chosen furniture do the work in place of heavy design. Each has a veranda, a seating area and a writing desk. The bathrooms are a signature: twin basins, a shower and a flush toilet, and then a large bathtub set for the view down the river valley. A family suite takes those travelling with children, and the private vehicle means families keep their own hours instead of joining a shared drive.

The Mara North Conservancy is a partnership between the camps and Maasai landowners, funded by lease payments that give the community a direct stake in keeping the land open for wildlife instead of turning it to grazing or farmland. Serian has served as a base for the Mara Predator Project, which tracks lion populations across the region. The camp runs largely on solar power, and much of what reaches the table comes from its own garden and neighbouring communities. The safari and the land beneath it hold each other up.
Guests fly in to the Mara North airstrip and are met by their guide, and from there the days take their own shape. Early drives give way to walks on foot and to fishing on the Mara, to bush meals and sundowners at the end of the day, to a night out fly-camping or an afternoon spent with Maasai neighbours. The scale stays intimate, the guiding stays serious, the mood stays unhurried. It is the same combination Walker built the very first Serian camp around, and it has never needed changing.

You fly from Nairobi's Wilson airport to an airstrip in the Mara North Conservancy, about forty-five minutes to an hour by light aircraft, and the camp meets you for the transfer to its rise above the Mara River. We arrange the flights and timings, and we can also arrange a private charter, typically a Cessna Caravan or Pilatus PC-12, flown direct to the conservancy at a time that suits you.
The bush planes take soft bags of around fifteen kilograms per person including hand luggage, so a duffel is best. Every booking comes with its own vehicle, guide and spotter, so your team is ready when you arrive.
The Maasai Mara sits at around 1,500 to 1,800 metres, below the altitude at which malaria risk falls away, so both the CDC and TravelHealthPro treat it as a malaria area and antimalarial tablets are usually advised. The risk is lower than on the hot, humid coast but it is real, and it rises after the rains.
Because this is a health matter and guidance is reviewed regularly, please confirm the current position with a travel clinic or your doctor before you travel, and take the usual care against bites once the sun is down.
Days are warm and the mornings and evenings cool, so open-vehicle game drives at dawn can feel cold. The long rains fall roughly March to May and shorter rains around November, greening the plains; the dry months in between are clear and dusty.
Pack neutral colours, a warm fleece and a windproof layer for early drives, sun protection and a hat for the day, and a light waterproof in the green season. Closed shoes for any walking, and binoculars are worth bringing.
July to October is the migration window and the busiest at the crossings, while the green months around November and from March to May bring lush plains, calving and far fewer vehicles. Mara North holds a high density of big cats the whole year.
With private guiding and the day run on your own schedule, any season works well here, so the choice comes down to migration spectacle versus quiet, green plains.
