Ngare Serian sits on the west bank of the Mara River, across from the Mara North Conservancy, and it announces its character the moment you arrive, because there is no driving in. The reward for the crossing is one of the loveliest stretches of the Mara. Hippos hold the river below the tents, their calls carrying through the night, while the Oloololo Escarpment fills the horizon beyond. This is the smaller sister to Alex Walker’s original Serian, built to bring that same riverside stillness right down to the water’s edge, where the camp gathers close along the bank.
Alex Walker founded the Serian camps and runs them still, and he named this one exactly: “Ngare Serian” means “by the river” in Maa. The four tents stand on hardwood decks strung along the bank. Three of them face the rapids, while the fourth looks onto a quiet pool held by a resident pod of hippo. Here the bush comes right up to the canvas.

A private 4WD, a dedicated guide and a spotter come with every party as standard, never as an upgrade. The drives run to your own schedule rather than a shared one, timed around whatever the guide has tracked that morning. Many of Walker’s guides have stayed with him for decades, and they have built a name for real bush knowledge without ever losing their sense of fun.
Mara North Conservancy is private land rather than national reserve, and that single distinction opens up what the park boundary forbids, from night drives to guided walks on foot and off-road approaches to wildlife. This is high-density predator country, lions and leopards among them, across land shared by only a handful of camps. Guests can also take a full day into the Maasai Mara National Reserve for the great river crossings of the migration, which run from roughly July to October, when the herds mass at the water and the odds tilt in the crocodile’s favour.
Beyond the daily drives, there is more to fill a stay. The camp arranges a night under the stars at The Nest, a treehouse sleep-out and picnic spot booked separately, and fly-camping for those who want to go deeper into the bush after dark. Walks lead into Serian’s own protected ground beside the river, and visits to neighbouring Maasai communities can be set up on request. There is no Wi-Fi, which is the point.

The tents are large and furnished in the old manner, their Zanzibar-style four-poster beds set under canvas walls that open on three sides to the river breeze. Antique pieces and Oriental rugs are laid across the polished floors. Bathrooms run to twin basins, showers and bathtubs, and out on the decks sunken tubs let guests soak with the river and its wildlife in full view. Meals are relaxed and social, served family-style at a long wooden table, out on the deck by the fire, or set up somewhere unexpected in the bush.

The camp draws its staff largely from local Maasai communities, and its place in the conservancy links tourism to more than 800 Maasai landowners through lease income. Solar power runs the camp, and organic waste feeds the vegetable garden. It suits couples, families and small groups who want the Mara on their own terms.

You fly from Nairobi's Wilson airport to an airstrip in the Mara North Conservancy, about forty-five minutes to an hour by light aircraft, and the camp meets you for the transfer to the west bank of the Mara River.
If you would rather fly privately, we can arrange a charter for this leg, typically a Cessna Caravan or Pilatus PC-12, timed to your arrival in Nairobi. The final approach is on foot across a narrow rope suspension bridge, since there is no driving in.
The bush planes take soft bags of around fifteen kilograms per person including hand luggage, which suits the walk-in arrival. Every party has a private vehicle, guide and spotter waiting on the camp side.
The Maasai Mara sits at around 1,500 to 1,800 metres, below the altitude at which malaria risk falls away, so both the CDC and TravelHealthPro treat it as a malaria area and antimalarial tablets are usually advised. The risk is lower than on the hot, humid coast but it is real, and it rises after the rains.

Days are warm and the mornings and evenings cool, so open-vehicle game drives at dawn can feel cold. The long rains fall roughly March to May and shorter rains around November, greening the plains; the dry months in between are clear and dusty.
Pack neutral colours, a warm fleece and a windproof layer for early drives, sun protection and a hat for the day, and a light waterproof in the green season. Closed shoes for any walking, and binoculars are worth bringing.
July to October is the migration window and the busiest at the crossings, while the green months around November and from March to May bring lush plains, calving and far fewer vehicles. Mara North holds strong big-cat numbers all year.
With private guiding and a river-edge setting, any season rewards a stay, so the decision is really about migration spectacle versus quiet, green plains and a resident hippo pod below the tents.
The migration reaches the wider Mara from July to October, with the Mara River crossings peaking in August. Full-day drives from the camp reach the national reserve for the crossings, while your base stays in the quieter Mara North Conservancy.
Because every booking comes with its own vehicle, guide and spotter, you can time those long days around what has been tracked rather than a shared schedule. The rope-bridge arrival and the hippos below the four tents make the camp itself part of the experience.
It can suit families, though it is a small four-tent camp reached across a rope suspension bridge with a fast river running beneath, so it favours steady, confident children over very small ones. A treehouse sleep-out at The Nest can be arranged, which older children tend to love.
