Renate and Udo Marahrens bought their first plot below the Ngorongoro Crater in 1997, meaning the farmhouse as a home, not a business. It became the first guest room instead. Almost three decades on, the couple still live on site with their dogs, running the lodge themselves. More than a thousand trees have gone into the ground since, and farm and lodge have grown up together.
It has the feel of a garden retreat slotted between game drives.
The lodge stands at around 1,600 metres, well below a crater rim climbing to roughly 2,500 metres. It has the feel of a garden retreat slotted between game drives. This is not a wilderness camp in its own right. The gate into the conservation area is twelve to twenty kilometres off, depending on the route, far enough to keep the lodge clear of the traffic that builds around the rim.
Coffee, flowers and cattle work the land around the lodge, a country estate first and a safari base second. Cottages and suites are scattered through gardens of bougainvillea and jacaranda, linked by stone paths that run under frangipani. Each has its own name, furnished with antiques and Tanzanian crafts, and no two are decorated alike. The register is comfortable and carefully kept, never showy.

Polished terracotta floors run beneath high beamed ceilings, and French windows open onto the gardens. Fischer’s lovebirds and yellow-bellied sunbirds work the flowering shrubs outside. The crater lies a short drive up the escarpment, and vehicles climb to the rim before dropping to the floor. Lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo move among an estimated 25,000 large animals. Lake Manyara National Park, known for its tree-climbing lions and its flamingos, is thirty to forty-five minutes by road, and Tarangire is reachable as a day trip. Guests travel with a private vehicle and guide, and most leave early to be among the first through the gate before the day builds.
Guided walks through the coffee plantation explain how the beans are grown and roasted, and a visit to a neighbouring farm introduces the family who work it. Karatu’s market is a short distance away, the starting point for hikes and for cultural visits that reach out to the Hadzabe communities near Lake Eyasi. Closer to home, a swimming pool looks out over the farmland, massages are given in the room, and an underground cellar stocked with South African labels is opened for tastings and for dinners taken by candlelight.

Arrival is across the lawn after a dusty transfer, the gardens and the rooms coming slowly into view, and it sets the tone for everything that follows. Dinner runs to four courses, built from herbs, vegetables and fruit grown in the lodge’s own gardens and served in the farmhouse dining rooms or, on a warm evening, out on the lawn. The cooking leans European with local touches. Afternoon tea comes with homemade cakes in the garden, and packed lunches go out with guests heading into the parks.
Renate and Udo run Plantation Lodge as a small, personal operation, and it shows in the detail. The rooms are individually kept, the gardens tended to the last border, and the staff drawn from the surrounding communities. It reads as a comfortable, characterful highland retreat rather than a rim-view showpiece, the coffee estate around it doing much of the work. Couples looking for a graceful pause between parks are well served, and so are families, with interconnecting rooms, a two-bedroom farmhouse and a four-bedroom Garden House among the options.

conservation
The lodge's support comes chiefly through employing staff from surrounding communities and sourcing produce grown organically on site or bought locally, alongside water conservation and waste recycling. Coffee-farm and neighbouring-farm visits channel guest interest directly into the local agricultural community.

Fly from Arusha to Lake Manyara airstrip, about twenty-five minutes on the scheduled service, and the drive on to the lodge takes around half an hour, up the escarpment and into the farm country around Karatu. A private charter into the same airstrip, typically a Cessna Caravan or Pilatus PC-12, works when the schedules do not, and light aircraft take soft bags only, about fifteen kilograms per person.
By road, allow around three hours from Arusha and closer to four from Kilimanjaro International. The route climbs past Lake Manyara and arrives through coffee and wheat country, so the drive reads as part of the trip rather than a cost of it.
Early, and worth the alarm. The conservation area gate beyond Karatu opens at six in the morning, the descent roads to the crater floor operate from six until four in the afternoon, and every vehicle must be off the floor by six in the evening. Guests leave the lodge at first light with breakfast packed, spend the strong morning hours on the floor and climb out after a picnic lunch, back at the gardens by mid-afternoon.
Entry to the conservation area is charged per person and each descent adds a per-vehicle crater fee, all of which we build into your quote from the start. The rim runs cold and misty at dawn even when Karatu is mild, so carry layers you can shed.
Plan for them, even though the highlands feel nothing like mosquito country. Karatu sits at around 1,600 metres, below the 1,800-metre altitude at which the CDC and the UK's official travel health advice agree Tanzanian malaria risk ends, so antimalarials are usually recommended for a stay here, cool nights notwithstanding.
The advice moves year to year, so confirm the current position with a travel clinic or your doctor before you travel, and keep the usual habits after dark.
Two nights cover the crater properly: arrive, take the full crater day from first light, and move on the next morning. Three let the place do its other job, with a day for Lake Manyara or the Hadzabe communities out towards Lake Eyasi, and slow hours in the gardens between, which is what the farm is really for.
It also sits well late in an itinerary, when the early starts of the Serengeti have been paid and a garden, a pool and a four-course dinner do their restorative work before the flight home.
Highland farm weather: warm, bright days at around 1,600 metres, nights cold enough that the wood-burning stoves are lit, and a rhythm of long rains from March to May and short rains in November and December that keeps the coffee country green. The crater rim above is a different climate again, colder and often in mist at dawn.
Pack layers rather than bulk: a fleece and windproof for the crater morning, neutral colours for the parks, comfortable shoes for the plantation and village walks, and something warm and unhurried for dinner. Swimwear is worth the space for the pool.
