Mnemba Island

Mnemba Island is a private retreat off Zanzibar’s north-eastern coast, home to luxury accommodation and world class scuba diving

In terms of design philosophy, Mnemba Island chooses the relaxed over the opulent. Those expecting marble-floored lobbies and infinity pools may be better served elsewhere. Here, the focus is on natural materials, with an architectural style that promotes a direct connection with the island’s environment. The tactile pleasure of sand underfoot serves as a continuous reminder of the surrounding natural beauty.

Dining on the island meets the criteria of being both superb and plentiful. The culinary approach is a sophisticated one, serving a variety of dishes that appeal to a diverse palate while maintaining high-quality standards. The emphasis is not just on presentation but also on the source and preparation of the ingredients, leading to an enhanced dining experience that complements the island’s overall ethos.

Guest Rooms

Each of the eleven private bandas on Mnemba Island has been meticulously crafted from local timber and woven coconut palm. These spacious chalets offer airy, open-plan interiors featuring large beds, minimalist wooden furniture, and an abundance of soft cream-colored seating. The adjacent open-air lounges come equipped with an assortment of board games and a well-stocked minibar. Timber-constructed bathrooms feature dual sinks and a generously sized rain shower. From each banda, a sandy path offers direct access to the private beachfront, complete with shaded seating and sun loungers.

Activities

Mnemba Island provides an array of outdoor activities that focus on both adventure and the aquatic environment. Options include a range of watersports, while snorkeling offers a more serene interaction with the underwater world. For a more immersive experience, the island offers scuba diving excursions that are truly exceptional, given the quality of the local marine life.

Conservation and Sustainability

Mnemba Island collaborates with the Zanzibar Department of Fisheries and local fishermen in a project named the Mnemba Island Marine Conservation Area (MIMCA), founded in 2005. This protected zone balances tourism and fishing activities, with the generated fees contributing to community initiatives. Educational programs aim to promote sustainable fishing practices among local fishermen. The reef ecology and whale migration patterns are regularly monitored by the Oceans Without Borders team.
