Six tents stand among acacia and kigelia on the banks of the Tarangire River, in the quieter, central sector of the park. This is a stretch of country most visitors never see, well away from the crowds that gather at the busier northern gate, and Kuro Tarangire has it largely to itself.

The camp holds a licence that is rare in this part of Tanzania, one that lets walking safaris and night game drives run inside the park itself, alongside the usual daytime circuit. Elephants move through camp on their own routes, browsing between the tents with nothing between you and them. Sausage trees lean over the riverbank beside the acacias. A comfortable drive to the east lie the Silale and Gursi swamps, wetlands that hold lion and leopard, and where roan antelope, a regional specialty, appear among the zebra, giraffe and impala.

The tents are Meru-style canvas, raised on platforms under thatched roofs that keep them cool through the heat of the day. Inside, unvarnished wood and undyed creams and browns replace any colonial trappings. The mess is open-sided wood and thatch, lit by solar after dark and built from local materials, so the camp leaves little trace when it comes down at the end of the season.
Kuro Tarangire is one of a small collection of remote camps that Nomad Tanzania runs across the country’s northern and southern parks, and it stays deliberately intimate. Six tents, plus a family unit with two en-suite bedrooms and a shared living area, make it comfortable rather than showy, built around immersion in the bush. Coffee arrives at the tent at first light, the eastern-facing veranda catches the sunrise over the trees while the birds work through the branches, and the day begins at whatever pace you choose.
Because this is a national park rather than a private reserve, the night drives and walking safaris need a TANAPA ranger and are planned in advance, and few camps in the area are licensed to run them at all. On a night drive, the spotlight picks out leopard and owls. On foot, an armed guide and ranger read the tracks, the smaller creatures and the birdlife that a vehicle races past. Two or three nights allows time for a walk, a night drive and several day drives, and the different rhythms build a fuller picture of the place.

Cooking is home-style and fresh, served communally in the open-sided mess or privately on request, with bush breakfasts and sundowners arranged out in the park, wherever the day happens to take you. Because the camp is small, an early start for a walk or a late return from a night drive is simply built around, never fitted to a fixed timetable. After dark, lantern light and a soft solar glow settle over the camp, and lion, hyena and the occasional shuffle of an elephant fill the space beyond the canvas.
The camp supports conservation and community work through the Nomad Trust. Most of the staff are Tanzanian, many from communities that border the park, and the seasonal, low-infrastructure build carries the same light-footed approach right through to the guest experience. Birdlife runs to more than 550 species, worked through by an armed guide on foot or picked out from the open 4×4 on the day circuit across riverine woodland, swamp edges and plains.

You fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport on your international flight, and from Arusha nearby reach the park either by road, about three hours, or by a light aircraft hop to the Kuro airstrip in the central park, a short drive from camp. We build the flights and transfers in so the day joins up without long waits.
Seats are shared and the exact departure is fixed the day before, once the airline sets its routing, so the final timings firm up close to the day. Alternatively we can arrange a private charter to the Kuro airstrip, typically a Cessna Caravan or Pilatus PC-12, departing whenever suits your day. Luggage is soft bags only, with a weight limit of around 15 to 20kg depending on the airline, which we confirm with you before you pack.
Yes. Tarangire lies below 1,800 metres, and current UK guidance from TravelHealthPro treats all of mainland Tanzania below that height as a malaria area. The camps provide screened tents, nets and repellent, but antimalarial tablets and covering up after dark are the real protection.
Health advice can change from year to year, so we always ask you to confirm the current position with a travel clinic or your doctor before you travel, and to take the usual care against bites after dark.
This is warm northern-circuit country, with comfortable days in the mid to high twenties and cooler mornings and evenings, and it can feel hotter and dustier in the open dry-season terrain.
Pack light layers with a fleece for early drives, in neutral colours, plus a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and good sunscreen, and a light waterproof if you travel in the green season.
Come between July and October, when shrinking waterholes draw Tarangire's big elephant herds and concentrated game back to the river and the thinning bush opens up clear viewing. August and September are the peak. The green season from November to May is quiet and best for birding, though the long rains of March and April disperse the game and close some camps.
Kuro sits in the quieter central sector on the Tarangire River, and holds a licence, rare in this part of the park, that lets walking safaris and night drives run inside the park itself alongside the daytime circuit, so a dry-season stay here can go well beyond drives. It sits naturally at the start or end of a northern circuit with Ngorongoro and the Serengeti.

The northern circuit has better coverage than Tanzania's remote parks, but Tarangire is still bush. Expect wifi in the main area of camp, often slow, and patchy mobile signal that comes and goes and drops out on drives.
