Laba Siwandu stands on the shore of Lake Nzerakera, within the Rufiji lake system of Nyerere National Park in southern Tanzania. Here the water sets the routine more than the land does. Boats leave the camp’s jetties at dawn and dusk, gliding past hippo pods and basking crocodiles on a lake that draws wildlife and guests alike to its edge.

Thirteen tents run along the lakeshore, six in the North camp and seven in the South, each raised on its own timber platform. The height earns its keep. Every private veranda has a clear line of sight to the water, and elephants and hippos pass through on their way to drink. The Rufiji system holds large numbers of hippo and crocodile, and along the shallows the birdlife is near constant.
Breakfast is often served afloat, fish eagles and kingfishers working the shallows as the boat drifts along the channels. Pontoon lunches move slowly past the hippo pods, and sunset cruises pause at points along the lake as the light changes over the water. On land, game drives and guided walks lead through palm-fringed channels and open woodland where elephant, buffalo, lion and leopard are seen regularly.

Palms line the shore here rather than the dry grassland typical of much of Nyerere, and that gives the setting a character all its own. African wild dogs, uncommon across most of their range, are seen with some regularity in this part of the park.
Two sections of camp, spaced along the shore, keep guests apart rather than clustered together. Each tent has canvas walls, a thatched or canvas roof and a veranda facing the lake, furnished simply in wood and natural fabric. The style is traditional rather than contemporary, with palms and open bush framing the tents and little in the way of hard landscaping between them. From the raised decks, hippo, crocodile and passing plains game are visible without leaving the tent, and the open-sided mess, lounge and pool all face the same stretch of water.
Nyerere National Park replaced the old Selous Game Reserve designation, and it is the Rufiji’s network of lakes and channels that supports the density of wildlife around Siwandu. Elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard and giraffe appear regularly on land activities. Rhino and cheetah are extremely rare in this part of Tanzania and are not a realistic expectation. On the water, hippo and crocodile are the constants, joined by herons, storks, kingfishers and fish eagles working the margins throughout the day.

Most guests come for the boat safaris, which run on Lake Nzerakera and the connected Rufiji channels close to where the lake meets the river. Standard cruises focus on hippo, crocodile and birdlife, while breakfast and sundowner cruises build a meal into the outing. Morning and afternoon game drives cover the woodland and lake plains. Guided walks set out with armed guides to work the ground on foot, tracking and reading the smaller signs of animal movement. For a different way to spend time on the water, there is catch-and-release fishing on the lake.
The camp is reached by a flight of roughly forty minutes south from Dar es Salaam to the local airstrip, then a short transfer to camp. Nights carry the sound of hippo grunting and, at times, lion calls across the water. By day, palms rustle and elephants move through camp on their own schedule. Evenings often end with lamplit paths back to the tent and the lake still audible in the dark, while the hot afternoons are best given over to the pool, with animals visible along the shoreline throughout.

By air from Dar es Salaam, forty-five minutes south over the delta country. Two strips serve the camp: Siwandu airstrip sits close by on the lakeshore, while Mtemere makes a scenic hour's game drive in, and the flights also connect through Zanzibar, Mafia and Ruaha for a longer route. We build the legs into your itinerary so the connections meet in a single day, and we can also arrange a private charter, typically a Cessna Caravan or Pilatus PC-12.
The scheduled aircraft are small, with shared seats and soft bags only, around 15 to 20kg per person depending on the airline. We confirm the exact limit with you before you pack.
Yes. The Rufiji lake system lies well below 1,800 metres, and both the CDC and the UK's official travel health advice treat all of mainland Tanzania under that height as malaria country, so tablets are recommended alongside the nets and repellent the camp provides. Being on the water does not change the advice; the lakes are exactly where mosquitoes do well.
We do not give medical advice. We are travel planners rather than doctors, so the choice of tablets, and whether they suit everyone in the party, belongs in a conversation between you and your own doctor or a travel clinic. What we can be useful on is the non-medical part: cover up once the light goes, and carry repellent.
Low, warm and humid by Tanzanian standards. From June to October the days run hot and dry with soft, mild mornings, October hotter still, and the green season from November brings short sharp storms before the long rains arrive in March. There is no real cold here at any point in the year.
Bring light clothing in neutral colours, a sun hat and high-factor sunscreen for the hours on the water, where the glare doubles off the lake, and a light long-sleeved layer for the evenings against mosquitoes rather than chill.
The dry months from June to October are the pick, when the shrinking water concentrates game around the lakes and the boat safaris run past ever busier banks. The camp closes each year from the middle of March to the end of May for the long rains, and the weeks either side of that closure are the greenest and best for birdlife.
We would plan three nights or more. The rhythm here is built around mornings and evenings on the water, and it takes a few days for that rhythm to do its work.
Families are welcome, with the boat safaris giving children something few parks in Tanzania can offer, hippo and elephant watched from the water rather than from a queue of vehicles. The walking safaris are the exception: they are held to guests aged sixteen and over, in small groups of no more than six.

Expect very little. This corner of Nyerere is a long way from the towers of the northern circuit, so any wifi lives in the main areas and moves slowly, and phone signal comes and goes at best.
