Hamerkop House

A four-room guest house on a golf and wildlife estate between Kilimanjaro airport and Arusha, a private home until 2019.

Country: Tanzania
Location: Arusha
Number of rooms: 4

Meru and Kilimanjaro from hole 16

Hamerkop House was a private home before it opened as a guest house in 2019, and it still reads like one. Four en-suite rooms, stone floors, a garden pool, and doors thrown open onto the lawn. The address is Kiligolf, a golf and wildlife estate on the road between Kilimanjaro International Airport and Arusha, in northern Tanzania.

Dik-dik graze the fairways below Kilimanjaro on a clear morning.

An eighteen-hole championship course runs through the estate, and the wildlife along it keeps to a modest scale. Vervet monkeys work the lawns and a path through the trees leads onto the course. Dik-dik graze the fairways below Kilimanjaro on a clear morning. Evening drinks are carried down to the sixteenth hole, where Meru and Kilimanjaro stand out at dusk.

Two rooms open off the main lounge; two more are cottages set around a flower-filled courtyard. Each has a private verandah and twin or double beds under a mosquito net. The bathrooms have double basins and rain showers, and a glass door to a walled courtyard with a bath and an open-air shower. Stone floors, white and sandy tones, colonial furniture against East African textiles.

The pool holds the middle of the day and the lawn beyond it.

Private chefs cook everything, breakfast through to sundowner cocktails. Lunch is carried out to the covered veranda above the water. The pool holds the middle of the day and the lawn beyond it. Dinner might be laid in the pool house across that lawn, a roofed open-air room built for it. A therapist gives treatments daily, and the house can be taken whole, for a family or a small group, or room by room.

conservation

Women's Group Makes Biodegradable Lunch Boxes

Across the wider operation, a women's group in Mto wa Mbu makes the biodegradable lunch boxes used in camps and guest houses, and nine young men from a homeless shelter in Arusha have been given employment. Neither programme is specific to Hamerkop House, but both sit within the same network that runs it.

frequently asked questions

By road from Kilimanjaro International Airport, about forty-five minutes, and we have you met off the flight whatever the hour. The estate sits near the small town of Usa River, roughly twenty-five kilometres from both the airport and Arusha, which is the point of it: close enough to the airport that a late arrival is bearable, far enough from Arusha that you are not in the town.

Leaving for safari is where it earns its keep. The estate has its own airstrip, Dolly, a few minutes from the house, which some of the local airlines include on their schedules and which a private charter can use; we can arrange one, typically a Cessna Caravan or a Pilatus PC-12, direct to Tarangire, Manyara or the Serengeti. Otherwise the scheduled flights leave from Arusha Airport, about an hour's drive west. Either way the light aircraft take soft bags only, fifteen kilograms a person including hand luggage.

Yes. The house is let either room by room or as a whole, and taken whole it is yours: four rooms, the pool, the chefs and the staff, with no other guests. It is booked on a bed and breakfast, half board, full board or all-inclusive basis, and for exclusive use we would suggest full board at least, because being cooked for at odd hours is half the reason to stay.

For a family, taking it whole is the natural fit, with the two cottage rooms across the courtyard giving older children a door of their own. Tell us the children's ages when you enquire: the house has a rule on the youngest and we would rather confirm it for your dates than quote it here, and the layout, an open garden with the pool in the middle of it, suits children who can swim.

Yes. The UK's official travel health service, TravelHealthPro, rates every part of Tanzania below 1,800 metres as high risk and recommends antimalarial tablets for it, treating only ground above 1,800 metres as free of risk, and the American CDC draws the same altitude line and recommends prescription medicine for the areas beneath it. Arusha sits at about 1,400 metres, well below that line, and so does everything between the city and the airport.

We do not make medical recommendations. We are travel planners, not medical professionals, so which tablets suit you, and whether they suit a child or anyone else in the party, is a conversation between you and your own doctor or a travel clinic, ideally with your dates and route in front of you. The non-medical part is easy: the beds are netted, and long sleeves and repellent from late afternoon are worth the small effort, particularly when dinner is laid outside in the pool house.

Yes to both. Wifi is included and runs throughout the house rather than only in the main rooms, and there is mobile signal on the estate, which is a fair reflection of where you are: twenty-five kilometres from an international airport, not in the bush. It is the place to send the last emails before a safari, or to sort out a flight change at the end of one, without the connection being the day's project.

Arusha has a highland climate: warm days, cool nights, and temperatures that run from around 10 to 30 degrees across the year. The long rains fall from March to May and the short rains usually in November and December, with June to October the dry months.

Pack for both ends of the day: something light for the pool and the golf course, and a fleece or a jacket for the early morning ride and for drinks at the sixteenth hole once the sun has gone. If you are arriving off a long flight to sleep here first, keep a swimming costume and one warm layer in your hand luggage so the first evening does not depend on the suitcase turning up.

One at the start is the standard use and it is enough: land, sleep, breakfast, and fly out from the estate's airstrip or from Arusha Airport. At the end of a trip two nights is the better number when the flight home leaves late in the day, because it turns the wait into a round of golf or a morning in Arusha National Park rather than an afternoon watching the clock. We would not build a longer stay here unless golf is a serious part of the holiday, in which case the course on the doorstep changes the arithmetic.
