Karen Blixen Cottages occupies a five-acre garden estate in the Karen suburb of Nairobi, on land that once formed part of Blixen’s own coffee farm. Thirteen en-suite rooms are arranged across seven cottages, each sitting beneath century-old jacaranda, croton and bottle brush trees. The museum in her former farmhouse is a short walk away, and the Langata Gate into Nairobi National Park is only around ten minutes’ drive.

Guests check in at Swedo House, a wooden colonial residence raised on stilts and built between 1906 and 1908. This is a soft landing before safari, or somewhere to decompress once it is over, with the whole city held at arm’s length.
American molecular biologist Dr Bonnie Dunbar bought the land in 1999. She built the cottages the following year, styling them on the pioneer look of Swedo House. In 2008 she oversaw something rarer still, the relocation of the historic Grogan Manor House, moved brick by brick from central Nairobi to save it from demolition. It now hosts private candlelit dinners in the gardens.

The cottages are single-storey, built from local hardwood, with exposed-beam ceilings, sprung wooden floors and stone fireplaces. The days move slowly here, from early breakfasts timed to the game drives to long afternoons by the heated pool. The estate’s story begins with coffee. Swedo House was built between 1906 and 1908 by early Swedish settlers as a hunting lodge, and served as the farm manager’s house on the wider Swedo-African Coffee Company land. Karen Blixen spent considerable time here with her brother Thomas Dinesen, in the years when the farm still ran on its own rhythms. Today the house is the reception, and arriving guests step straight into the early 1900s the moment they cross the threshold.
Dr Bonnie Dunbar bought the property directly from her friend, the safari guide Frank Sutton, shortly before he died in 2000. Over the following year she built the thirteen rooms, mirroring the raised timber-frame look of Swedo House rather than importing a generic hotel style. The 2008 rescue of the Grogan Manor House, dismantled and rebuilt in the gardens to escape demolition, came from the same instinct to preserve rather than replace. The estate has since passed to the Karen Blixen Group, which runs the cottages, gardens and restaurants today.

Accommodation ranges from Classic Rooms with king beds to Junior Suites arranged around open fireplaces. Three Family Cottages each hold two en-suite bedrooms linked by a shared living room and a stone-clad fireplace, while the Honeymoon Cottage adds a second fireplace and a separate sitting area. All have dressing alcoves and private verandas facing the gardens. Dining spreads across several rooms, with Hattons Lounge, all stone fireplace, skylights and glass walls, serving international and Swahili cooking, and Babette’s given over to evening fine dining.

Half-day game drives run into Nairobi National Park, where lions, rhinos and giraffes graze against the city skyline. Nearby, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust cares for orphaned elephant calves, and the Giraffe Centre brings guests close to endangered Rothschild giraffes. On foot, the Karen Blixen Museum and the Kazuri Beads workshop are both within reach, the latter where hundreds of women hand-make ceramic beads. The Karen Golf and Country Club can be arranged during a stay.

The Kazuri Beads workshop nearby employs several hundred women making ceramic beads and pottery, and cottage staff arrange visits as part of the stay. Guests are also directed to the Giraffe Centre and David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, established conservation organisations that the cottages actively connect visitors with rather than operate directly.

No domestic flight is needed. The cottages are in Karen, on Nairobi's south-western side, with the drive from Jomo Kenyatta International airport taking between thirty minutes and an hour depending on traffic, and Wilson airport, the base for safari flights, closer still. We arrange transfers to meet your flights, however early or late they land.
The position makes it a natural bookend to a safari: an easy first night to shake off the long haul, or a last one within reliable reach of the airport.
Barely, for the city itself. The UK's official travel health advice classes Nairobi as very low risk, advising bite avoidance rather than antimalarial tablets, and the CDC recommends no tablets for the urbanised city either, just the usual insect precautions. The altitude, around 1,800 metres here, is a large part of why. Low risk is not the same as no risk.

Highland-mild the year round: warm days, cool mornings, and evenings fresh enough that the cottage fireplaces get lit. The long rains fall from around March to May and shorter rains in November, typically as afternoon showers that leave the gardens greener for it.
Pack light layers with a proper jumper for the evenings, sun protection for the middle of the day and a light waterproof in the rainy months. If safari legs follow, neutral colours for the bush pack once and serve both.
The cottages work in any month, since Nairobi's climate stays mild and the stay usually follows your international flights rather than a season. The gardens themselves are the constant, and the birdlife in the old trees performs the year round.
For a half-day game drive in Nairobi National Park, the dry months, June to October and January to February, give the clearest conditions and the shortest grass. The rains trade some of that for green gardens and fewer visitors.
Yes, and that flexibility is one of the property's quiet strengths. Early breakfasts are laid on before morning game drives, dinners are held back for late arrivals off delayed flights, and between those the restaurants serve through the day, so nobody's plans bend around a fixed sitting.

Yes. Children are welcome, baby cots are provided on request, and extra beds can be added in the larger cottages, so most family shapes fit without squeezing.
