A European family built Alfajiri Beach Villa and continues to run it, and the style follows from that: coastal Kenyan materials handled with a Mediterranean eye. Thatched roofs, coral stone, lime-washed walls and hardwood furniture sit under high ceilings, in whites and sea-blue tones throughout. Open verandas and shaded gazebos face the ocean, framed by tropical gardens that screen the house from its neighbours.

Meals centre on seafood landed nearby, with shellfish, yellowfin tuna, dorado and snapper appearing alongside Mediterranean and Italian dishes given a coastal Kenyan turn. The chef consults guests each day, and food is served wherever it suits: the indoor dining room, the veranda for breakfast and lunch over the water, or a garden gazebo for an evening barbecue. Celebration dinners are arranged without fuss, and imported wines, beers and spirits feature in many stays. The pace is entirely the guests’ own.
A traditional ngalawa, the local sailing outrigger, takes guests out to the reef with local fishermen, an hour of snorkelling in clear water before a seafood lunch by the pool. Much of the day comes ready to hand. A daily massage, a vehicle with driver, and access to a nearby gym, sauna and health club are all part of the arrangement, as is golf at the eighteen-hole course at Leisure Lodge, a short drive from the villa. Beyond the villa, the coast opens onto scuba diving, kitesurfing, deep-sea fishing and sea kayaking, and dhow trips run out to Kisite Marine National Park, where snorkellers share the water with reef fish and, in season, dolphins and turtles. Inland, Shimba Hills National Park lies around forty-five minutes away, a coastal park of elephants, forest and waterfalls, with quad biking on its fringes. Day safaris reach further still, to Tsavo East for savannah wildlife and big game. The range is unusual for a beach house.
The wider Diani area supports several conservation organisations that guests visit from the villa, among them Colobus Conservation, which protects the area’s colobus monkeys, and Diani Turtle Watch, which works with marine turtles. Closer in, monkeys and coastal birds move through the gardens and the forest patches nearby, and the reef and lagoon carry their own marine life. It is that combination of ocean, forest and inland parks within easy reach that gives a stay here its range, all without moving far from the sand.

Diani has its own airstrip at Ukunda, a few minutes' drive from the villa, and scheduled light aircraft fly there from Nairobi's Wilson airport twice a day, about an hour and a quarter in the air. The airstrip transfer comes as part of the villa's arrangement. We can also arrange a private charter, typically a Cessna Caravan or Pilatus PC-12, straight from a safari airstrip such as the Mara to Ukunda, so the beach follows the bush without a change of plane in Nairobi.
The scheduled flights take soft bags only, twenty kilograms per person including hand luggage, so pack a duffel rather than a hard case. Flying into Mombasa's international airport also works: since the Dongo Kundu bypass opened in 2024 the drive south to Diani takes around forty-five minutes to an hour, with no Likoni ferry crossing, and we build the road transfer in.
Yes, plan on them. The Kenyan coast is a genuine malaria area, not a low-risk one. The UK's official travel health advice classes Kenya as high risk for malaria, treating only the city of Nairobi and the highlands above 2,500 metres differently, and the CDC recommends antimalarial tablets for all areas below that altitude. Diani sits at sea level, squarely inside the zone.
A travel clinic or your doctor will settle the right course a few weeks before you fly, and mention every stage of the trip so the safari and beach legs are covered together. Day to day it comes down to repellent and covering arms and ankles once the light goes.
Warm the whole year, with daytime temperatures running from the high twenties to the low thirties and the sea breeze doing the cooling. Two monsoon winds set the calendar: the kaskazi from the north-east brings the hottest, driest months from around December to March, and the cooler kusi from the south-east blows from May to October. The long rains fall from late April into June and a shorter wet spell arrives in November, with showers tending to come in brief, heavy bursts rather than settled grey days.
Pack light cotton or linen, swimwear, a hat and strong sun protection, with a long-sleeved layer for the evenings that doubles as mosquito cover. Nothing formal is needed at any point, and a soft duffel suits the light aircraft.
For the lagoon at its calmest and clearest, come between October and March, when the kaskazi season settles the sea. Snorkelling and diving on this coast are at their best then, and December to March is the hottest, driest stretch. Kite surfers get two seasons: steady kaskazi wind from January to March, and a stronger, cooler kusi blow from July to September.
The long rains from late April into June are the quietest weeks on the beach, trading some sunshine for empty sand, with the rain arriving in short downpours rather than washed-out days.
The published rate is full board with menus written around the guests, and it carries drinks with it: soft drinks, beer, wines and spirits are all included, with Champagne the one exclusion. A daily massage for each person, laundry, wifi, the airstrip transfer and a chauffeured car for the Diani strip all sit inside the rate, along with snorkelling gear, golf clubs and use of a gym and sauna nearby. There is a three-night minimum stay.

Very. There is no minimum age, and the rate includes nannies on duty around the clock, so parents actually get the holiday too. Toys are kept at the villa, children's meals are cooked to order at whatever hour suits, and older children take readily to the water, with body-boarding, snorkelling and kite-surfing lessons all close at hand.
Child rates run in age bands, from infants through to teenagers, so tell us the ages when we plan and we will price the villa accordingly and shape the days around them.
