Jack Bousfield crossed the Makgadikgadi in the 1960s and camped beneath the mokolwane palms of this same island. He was a crocodile hunter turned safari man. He died in a plane crash in 1992. His son Ralph co-founded Uncharted Africa the following year with Catherine Raphaely in his father’s memory, built Jack’s Camp and San Camp, and later added Camp Kalahari on the spot where his father had once pitched a tent. Ralph remains closely involved in guiding standards across the three camps.
From November the rains turn the fringes of the pans into grassland, and around 30,000 zebra and wildebeest move onto it, with black-maned lion, cheetah, wild dog and leopard behind them. Water gathers on the salt, algae bloom and crustaceans hatch, and the flamingos arrive to breed on Sua Pan in March and April. Between May and October the same ground bakes pale and hard, and heat shimmers off the crust. The herds pull back west toward the Boteti River, and the pan is left to itself.

The main area is thatched and V-shaped, a dining arm and a lounge arm on polished concrete floors laid with sisal and kilims. A library fills the space between them, its glass cabinets holding ostrich eggs, animal skulls and silver cups. Dinner is one long table and directors’ chairs, which suits solo travellers well, and a fiery house condiment of chillies steeped in sherry and gin appears at most meals. The pool is set in the dappled shade of a camelthorn, under thatch, and elephants have been known to drink from it.
A few nights here work well either side of the Okavango Delta, since the pans offer the reverse of the Delta in almost every respect: no channels, no boats, no shade, immense flat distance instead. Access is a light aircraft flight of about fifty minutes from Maun, then a short drive in. Helicopters based nearby fly over the salt to Kubu Island and the Nata Bird Sanctuary, doors on or off. Sleep-outs on bedrolls under the Makgadikgadi night sky form part of longer stays, weather permitting.
