Bofa is residential coast, villa after villa, no resorts and no hotel signage on the road behind. Bahari Bliss is one of those houses, five bedrooms on the Kilifi shore of the Indian Ocean, let only as a whole house to a single family or group. Private gardens of coconut palms run from the oceanfront infinity pool down to the tideline, so swimming moves from fresh water to salt in a few paces.

A sculptural staircase and a single-person lift link the two levels, putting the ocean-facing balconies upstairs within reach of grandparents as well as children.
Harveen Bansal hosts the villa, and the chef’s menus are built around whatever came in that morning, red snapper, lobster and giant prawns from Kilifi’s small-boat fishers, mangoes and coconut from the market. Dinner can be laid in the dining room, on the pool terrace, or on the sand by candlelight.

Bofa Road runs north out of Kilifi town, past the Express Shop where the pantry gets stocked with gourmet groceries and wine, and ends among private gates rather than hotel signs. Bahari Bliss sits behind one of them, on a stretch of Bofa Beach given over to private houses, where at low tide the sand opens out wide and pale. Naivas supermarket in Kilifi town is about fifteen minutes back inland, Malindi Airport roughly an hour north, and Mombasa’s airport and railway terminus about an hour and a half south.
Inside, the finish is contemporary, pale tiled and marble floors, whitewashed walls, hardwood and sliding glass that opens the living space onto the pool deck. Five en-suite bedrooms sleep up to ten guests. The master suite takes the second floor, with a dressing room, a private balcony over the Indian Ocean, and a bathroom with both walk-in shower and soaking tub. Three further doubles and a ground-floor twin fill out the house, and the cooking happens in two kitchens, one for guests and a staff kitchen behind it, with a sunken fire-pit lounge down near the sand.

Days settle into their own shape, coffee on the master balcony while dhows work the horizon, hours by the pool, a massage in the treatment room, then the fire-pit once the heat drops out of the evening. Cots and extra beds are not provided, so sleeping arrangements work within the five-bedroom layout.
Kuruwitu Marine Sanctuary, at Vipingo, was Kenya’s first community-managed marine area, and its restored coral gardens are close enough for a morning’s snorkelling. Fees paid there go to local rangers and reef restoration, and guided visits can be arranged from the villa. The wider Kilifi coast opens up from here too, the fourteenth- to seventeenth-century mosques and tombs at Mnarani above the creek, the ruins at Gedi further north, and the coastal forest at Arabuko-Sokoke, 42 kilometres away. Bahari Bliss works as the still half of a longer Kenyan trip, a place to slow down after safari.

Malindi airport is about an hour away by road and is the practical arrival point, with Kilifi also reachable by road from Mombasa. We arrange the transfer as part of the booking.

Confirm the right course with a travel clinic or your doctor a few weeks out, and mention every stage of the trip so the safari and the beach are covered together. Repellent and long sleeves once the sun goes down do the rest.
Yes, and taking the whole house is what makes it work. Five bedrooms, a private chef and nobody else on site means mealtimes, naps and bedtimes run to your family rather than to a resort's timetable.
The pool needs supervision, which the house says plainly itself, and the beach at Bofa is tidal. Tell us the ages and what you want the days to look like, and the kitchen and the rooming are set up before you arrive.
Tropical and warm the year round. The kaskazi wind from the north-east brings the hottest, driest months from around December to March, while the cooler kusi from the south-east blows from May to October. The long rains fall from late April into June, with a shorter wet spell in November.
Pack light cotton or linen, swimwear, a hat and strong sun protection, plus a warmer layer for windy kusi evenings. Long sleeves after dark double as mosquito protection, and reef shoes are worth having.
October to March keeps the water calmest and clearest, and December to March is the hottest and driest stretch, which is the pick for swimming and time on the water.
From May to October the kusi cools the coast and puts more chop on the sea, which suits anyone who finds the heat heavy going. The long rains from late April into June are the quietest and cheapest weeks, with showers arriving in short bursts rather than settling in for the day.
