North of Mombasa, on the Vipingo coast of Kilifi County, My Amani stands on a stretch of white sand where turtles come ashore to nest. The villa is private and fully staffed. The Kuruwitu Marine Conservancy runs along the same beach, its coral gardens supporting reef fish in numbers rare on this part of the coast.

Jayen Patel is a physician. He is also a trained marine biologist, and it was the sight of bleached reefs and turtles lost in fishing nets that set him buying coastal plots, not to build resorts but to protect and re-wild the shoreline. My Amani grew out of that work, an existing home retrofitted rather than replaced, its income from guests funding conservation along this coast.

The result is a coastal home, not a hotel. A double-height living and dining room opens onto verandas through floor-to-ceiling glass, and an infinity pool runs toward the Indian Ocean. The name means peace in Swahili, and the mornings live up to it, with the reef breaking beyond the sand and coastal birds moving through the garden. The beach in front of the house is a working nesting ground for green and hawksbill turtles. The grounds team watches over it, protecting the footprint so that hatchlings can reach the water. Watching them scramble down the sand at first light is what this place is built around. It happens because the shoreline has been left largely alone, and the villa was built into that quiet, not over it.
Kuruwitu is reached along the beach, its coral gardens and shoals of reef fish open to snorkellers and reef walkers within marine conservation rules that keep shell collection off-limits and dive points regulated. Kilifi Creek, roughly half an hour north, is the base for Swahili dhow safaris and sunset cruises, for deep-sea fishing and for windsurfing. Kitesurfing runs from nearby Kilifi. The golf course at Vipingo Ridge is a short drive inland, and ocean-facing yoga and coastal massages are arranged at the villa itself.

Dining is entirely private and built around the household chef. Menus are agreed day by day, drawn from local seafood and coastal produce, and served wherever the hour suits: in the double-height dining room, under the sea-view pergola, poolside at breakfast, or as a barbecue laid out on the beach itself. Dietary preferences are worked into the plan without fuss. Nothing runs to a set time, and meals arrive when the swimming and the tide allow, so a long morning on the reef need not end for lunch.
The villa suits families and small groups who want a stretch of coast to themselves. The pool has a shallow section for children, the gated lawns give them room to run under continuous security, and the household can arrange babysitting. Beyond the beach the days can go further, to the Gede Ruins, to the mangroves of Mida Creek and to the Arabuko-Sokoke forest. The coast also makes a starting point for safaris inland to Tsavo, so a week here can hold the reef at one end and the bush at the other.

Most guests fly from Nairobi to Mombasa, about an hour in the air, and drive north to Vipingo in roughly an hour and a half, traffic through the city allowing. Malindi's airport works from the other direction with a similar drive south, and we build the road transfer in whichever way the flights fall. The villa can also arrange airport pickups on request at an additional cost.
The quickest arrival is by air to the Vipingo Ridge airstrip, fifteen minutes from the villa, which takes scheduled light aircraft from Nairobi's Wilson airport on certain days of the week. We can also arrange a private charter, typically a Cessna Caravan or Pilatus PC-12, onto the same 1.5 kilometre runway. Anyone who prefers the ground can take the modern railway from Nairobi to Mariakani station, about an hour's drive from Vipingo.
Yes, and it is worth being clear about, because the Kenyan coast is not the low-risk zone that the country's highlands are. Both the UK's official travel health advice and the CDC class Kenya as high risk for malaria everywhere below 2,500 metres, and Vipingo sits at sea level, so antimalarial tablets are normally recommended alongside repellent and covered arms and ankles after dark.
Guidance is reviewed regularly, so confirm the right course with a travel clinic or your doctor a few weeks before you travel, and mention every stage of the trip so safari and beach legs are covered together.
Tropical and warm the year round, with daytime temperatures from the high twenties to the low thirties. Two monsoon winds set the calendar: the kaskazi out of the north-east brings the hottest, driest months from around December to March, while the cooler kusi from the south-east blows from May to October and freshens the evenings. The long rains fall from late April into June, with a shorter wet spell in November.
Pack light cotton or linen, swimwear, a hat and strong sun protection, plus one warmer layer for windy kusi nights. Sandals cover almost everything at the villa, and long sleeves for the evening double as mosquito protection.
The villa opens the year round, and the sea makes the decision more than the sky. From around October to March the kaskazi season keeps the water calm and clear, which is when the coral gardens at Kuruwitu snorkel at their best, and December to March is the hottest, driest stretch. From May to October the kusi wind cools the coast and puts more chop on the reef.
The long rains from late April into June are the quietest weeks on this shore. Showers tend to arrive in short, heavy bursts rather than settling in for the day, so a stay then still delivers plenty of beach.
Yes. Wifi is complimentary and runs throughout the villa, so messages, email and photo uploads work from the bedrooms as well as the living spaces. If a stay depends on video calls or a stretch of remote work, tell us when we plan and we will confirm current speeds with the villa before you commit.
My Amani is only ever booked whole, so one group has the house, the household staff and the beach staircases entirely to itself. The villa's published terms ask a minimum of two nights for most of the year, rising to five nights in peak season.
Check-in runs from 2pm and check-out is at 10am, with earlier arrivals and later departures possible by prior request. We plan flights and road transfers around those times when we build the trip, so the house is ready the moment you reach it.
