Tok Tokkie Trails

Tok Tokkie Trails offers an immersive walking safari in Namibia’s NamibRand Nature Reserve

Founded by Marc and Elinor Duerr in 1997, Tok Tokkie Trails was inspired by the lack of walking trails in Namibia. The trail, initially started on a different route, has evolved over the years, continually fine-tuning the experience. Suitable for children above eight and ideal for small groups, the trail operates most of the year, pausing only during extreme weather conditions from mid-December to mid-February. The journey to the starting point includes a scenic drive through the NamibRand Nature Reserve, ensuring that every aspect of the experience is memorable and enriching.

Tok Tokkie Trails transcends traditional safari experiences, offering a ‘Hiking with Style’ approach. Guests are encouraged to savor the pristine surroundings and enjoy the simplicity of nature without forgoing comfort. The trail starts with a visit to the Namib Desert Environmental Education Trust (NaDEET), highlighting the trail’s commitment to environmental education and sustainability. This unique approach allows guests to connect deeply with the desert, its rhythms, and its mysteries, making it an ideal experience for those seeking a deeper understanding of Namibia’s natural beauty.

Guest Rooms

In the case of Tok Tokkie Trails, traditional guest rooms are replaced by open-air ‘dune beds’. These beds come equipped with foam mattresses, cotton duvets, and pillows, ensuring comfort while sleeping under the stars. This setup provides an unparalleled opportunity to connect with the desert environment in its most natural form, blending comfort with the raw beauty of the Namib Desert.

Activities

Activities at Tok Tokkie Trails focus on experiencing the desert’s natural beauty and wildlife. Guided walks lead guests through diverse landscapes, offering opportunities to observe the desert’s flora and fauna. The trail’s setting among the dunes ensures that each day is filled with new discoveries, from bird watching to identifying tracks of desert animals. Evening stargazing is a highlight, given the reserve’s status as an International Dark Sky Reserve.

Conservation and Sustainability

Tok Tokkie Trails is deeply committed to conservation and sustainability. This commitment is exemplified by starting the trail with a visit to the Namib Desert Environmental Education Trust (NaDEET), a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering environmentally responsible citizens in Namibia. This focus on environmental education underscores the trail’s dedication to preserving the unique ecosystems of the NamibRand Nature Reserve.
