Gorilla Forest Lodge stands on a flat ridge in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, in the Buhoma sector of southwestern Uganda. Its defining draw is position. That short walk to the trailhead is the practical advantage most guests remember. In truth, being inside the boundary matters less than it sounds. Treks are tightly governed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority wherever one sleeps, and good lodges just outside the gate face only marginally longer transfers to the same morning briefing point.
What sets the days here apart is what happens between treks. Gorilla families occasionally move through the lodge grounds, and colobus monkeys cross the canopy in full view of the suites. Birdsong runs as a constant backdrop, drawn from more than 350 species recorded in the forest, among them the Albertine Rift endemics that birders travel a long way to see.

The lodge reopened in June 2025 after a complete rebuild. It emerged as ten standalone suites perched on the forested slope, with locally crafted materials running throughout and floor-to-ceiling windows that pull the canopy indoors. Service is attentive and formal, closer to a forest hotel than a rustic camp.
Each suite is a freestanding structure on the hillside, built from natural timber and locally crafted finishes, with a private veranda that looks out over the canopy. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the forest at eye level. A deep tub in each bathroom looks directly into the trees, and after a long day on the trails, that soak is the detail guests return to, muscles aching and the morning’s encounter still fresh. The forest is never more than a pane of glass away.
Gorilla trekking is the central activity, with departures from the nearby Buhoma ranger station after a morning briefing. Tracking can take anywhere from three to eight hours, depending on where the family slept the night before, and time with the gorillas is held to a strict hour. Guests with limited mobility can still reach the forest, carried in customised sedan chairs by porters. Beyond the treks, guided walks reach Munyaga Waterfall, birding outings target the Albertine Rift endemics, and a two-hour community walk moves through the surrounding farming villages, taking in a tea project, a banana beer brewery and a local clinic.

The lodge is polished in a way that suits some guests more than others. Staff present formally, and the dining is structured. Buffet breakfasts come with eggs to order, lunches and dinners run to three courses, served in a forest-view dining area or, in fine weather, on a raised open-air platform. For those after a rough-edged eco-camp, the contrast with the rural simplicity of Buhoma village just beyond the gate may feel pronounced. For those who want comfort and warm, attentive service after demanding mornings in the forest, it lands precisely.
Between activities, a small spa offers herbal massages and other treatments, and evenings draw guests to the fire for drinks before dinner. The setting is intimate, the lodge compact, the forest close on every side. Returning from a trek to a log fire, a hot bath and a quiet lounge gives the days a clear rhythm of effort and reward, with tree frogs and birds rising as darkness settles over the valley. It is a place that knows exactly what it is.

Most guests fly. A light aircraft from Entebbe reaches Kihihi airstrip in around an hour and a half, and from there it is roughly one to one and a half hours by road to the Buhoma sector and Gorilla Forest Lodge, set within the park in the Buhoma sector. We build the flights and the transfer into your trip so the day joins up cleanly, and if you would prefer your own aircraft we can arrange a private charter to Kihihi, typically a Cessna Caravan or Pilatus PC-12, timed to your international arrival.
The alternative is the drive from Entebbe or Kampala, around eight to nine hours through the western highlands. It is a long day but a scenic one, and it can be broken with a night on the way if you would rather not do it in a single stretch.
Yes, in the sense that the whole of Uganda is a year-round malaria area, so Bwindi is not somewhere we would ever call malaria-free. Set on the forest floor in the Buhoma sector, the lodge is in cooler high country where mosquitoes are fewer than in the lowland parks, which lowers the risk, but the risk remains and antimalarial cover is the sensible course.
Malaria guidance shifts from year to year, so we always suggest confirming the current advice with a travel clinic or your doctor before you travel, and taking the usual care against bites after dark: repellent, long sleeves in the evening and the mosquito net over the bed.
Yes. Every visitor who treks needs a gorilla permit, and it is the one thing to secure early. The Uganda Wildlife Authority issues a fixed number each day for a single hour with a habituated family, and in the busy months they sell out well ahead, so we book yours in advance as part of arranging your stay.
At the time of writing a gorilla permit is 800 US dollars per person for foreign non-residents, a figure we confirm at the time of booking as the Authority reviews it periodically. The minimum age to trek is 15. The Buhoma ranger station where treks begin is a short walk from the lodge, which sits inside the park boundary. The forest is steep and often muddy, so a reasonable level of fitness helps, and we recommend a porter to carry your daypack and lend a hand on the climbs, which we arrange at the trailhead.
The lodge is a formal, contemporary forest lodge of ten standalone suites, closer to a boutique hotel than a rustic camp, so it leans towards couples and keen wildlife travellers. Gorilla trekking is in any case limited to guests aged 15 and over.
Families with teenagers can trek together, and younger children who cannot trek stay at the lodge with short forest walks close by, including sedan chairs available on the trail for less mobile guests. Tell us the ages of everyone travelling and we will advise honestly on the fit.
Pack for a wet mountain forest and a hard walk. The essentials are a waterproof jacket and over-trousers, sturdy walking boots already broken in with good ankle support, and a pair of garden gloves for gripping wet vegetation and pushing past nettles on the climb. Long sleeves and long trousers you can tuck into your socks, gaiters, insect repellent and a small daypack with plenty of water complete the kit. Neutral colours are best.
It is cool at altitude, so bring a warm layer for the early start and the evenings at Gorilla Forest Lodge, where the fire is usually lit. We recommend hiring a porter to carry your daypack and lend a hand on the steeper ground, and we arrange one for you at the trailhead.
Uganda's mobile networks, MTN and Airtel, cover the towns and the main roads, but the signal thins out across the Buhoma sector of Bwindi and can fade to nothing at the lodge and once you leave the main roads. Gorilla Forest Lodge offers wifi in the main areas, best treated as enough for messages and email rather than video calls or streaming.
