The Nile through a seven-metre gap

Murchison Falls National Park spreads across north-western Uganda, where the Victoria Nile cuts the country’s largest national park in two on its way west to Lake Albert. The drama gathers in one place. The entire river is forced through a gorge barely seven metres wide before it drops some 43 metres into the churning pool below.

That compression of a major river into so narrow a gap produces a constant spray and a sound that carries well before the falls come into view, with rainbows hanging above the gorge. A short, steep walk on the south bank brings the top of the falls within reach, where the water gathers speed before it vanishes into the cleft.

North of the river, palm-dotted savannah opens out beneath the Bunyoro escarpment, holding the densest concentrations of large game in the park. This is a stronghold for the Rothschild’s giraffe. They share the grassland with elephants, buffalo, lion, leopard and Uganda kob, on plains that run down to the water’s edge.

The Nile itself carries much of the wildlife interest. Boat cruises run upstream to the base of the falls and downstream to the broad delta where the river enters Lake Albert. Along the way they pass pods of hippo, large Nile crocodiles basking on the banks, and elephants drinking at the edge through the dry months.

Challenging conditions

For classic big game on the Victoria Nile, come in the dry months, December to February and June to July, when shrinking water draws elephant, buffalo, giraffe and kob to the river and low water suits the launch cruise and shoebill tracking. January and February are densest but hottest, so June and July are more comfortable. The two wet seasons turn the park green and are best for birding.

activities

Game drives, Nile cruises, chimp tracking

Game drives work the northern savannah for giraffe, elephant, buffalo and predators. Boat cruises run to the base of the falls and into the delta for hippo, crocodile and shoebill. A steep walk reaches the top of the falls. Chimpanzee tracking in Budongo Forest, sport fishing for Nile perch, birding and balloon safaris complete the options.

conservation

Anti-poaching and giraffe recovery

The Uganda Wildlife Authority manages the park, working with the Uganda Conservation Foundation on the Murchison Falls Recovery Project against poaching, and with Global Conservation on patrols and monitoring. Snaring and human-wildlife conflict remain pressures, but elephant, buffalo and Rothschild's giraffe numbers have climbed steadily since the lows of the 1980s.

Budongo Forest sits at the park's southern edge for chimpanzee tracking and forest birding. Kibale National Park holds very high chimpanzee densities alongside a long list of other primates. Queen Elizabeth National Park adds the Kazinga Channel and Ishasha's tree-climbing lions. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park offers mountain gorilla tracking in montane rainforest, while remote Kidepo Valley in the far north-east brings rugged wilderness, often reached by air from Murchison Falls.
