A microbrewery on the Atlantic Mole

Strand Hotel Swakopmund sits out on the Mole, the historic breakwater that pushes from the town beach into the Atlantic, with water on three sides and the dunes of the Namib beginning a few streets inland. Waves break against the seawall directly below the balconies. Most of its 125 rooms and suites look out over the water.

Paul Krynauw of dhk Architects, working with the Windhoek architect Axel Dainat, drew on the town’s German colonial seafront rather than importing a resort look. The building runs low and mostly in glass, stepping down with the promenade so that the public rooms, the restaurants and the terraces all turn to face the surf. Three restaurants, a beer garden and a beach pavilion line the seafront.

Brewer & Butcher brews its beer on site and serves Eisbein and grills beside a fireplace and an open-air beer garden. Ocean Cellar takes Namibian oysters, abalone and sushi to a show kitchen, and the Farmhouse Deli bakes from early morning, so the promenade air carries pastry and coffee along with the salt. On weekend evenings the locals fill the terraces alongside the guests.

Morning fog drifts in off the water and burns off by midday.

Arrival is through a tall glass atrium that frames the surf straight ahead. Morning fog drifts in off the water and burns off by midday. Later, leather chairs and an open fire in the Welwitschia Lounge hold the cold Atlantic air at a distance, and the Atlantic Spa runs crystal steam rooms, rain showers and a rooftop garden. Down on the sand, the beach pavilion pours drinks and snacks.
