Nine Nights Across Namibia's West

This route runs from Windhoek across the west of Namibia. A first night on the Zannier Reserve east of the capital gives way to the red dunes of Sossusvlei and the white clay pan of Deadvlei, then the Atlantic town of Swakopmund on its historic Mole. From there it reaches the Skeleton Coast, the only lodge inside the national park, before returning to Windhoek for the final nights.

Namibia’s network runs on light aircraft, so the days link by short flights and lodge transfers. Game drives, dune climbs and coastal drives fill the time between. The stays range from thatched huts above a rhino reserve to canvas chalets with rooftop beds, a beachfront hotel and timber cabins in the dunes, with two calm guesthouse nights framing the trip.

Daily Itinerary Breakdown

Windhoek and the Zannier Reserve

Thirty to forty minutes from Hosea Kutako International Airport, Omaanda sits on the private Zannier Reserve, a savannah conservancy that absorbs Windhoek entirely from view. Round thatched huts drawn from Owambo homestead architecture look across grassland scattered with acacia, each opening onto a private terrace with a fireplace and a bathtub set for the view. A waterhole below the lodge draws giraffe and antelope into sight of the pool and the restaurant deck.

Sossusvlei and the Red Dunes

Kulala Desert Lodge stands in the Kulala Wilderness Reserve, with a private entry point on the dry Tsauchab River. From here guides drive into Namib-Naukluft National Park at first light, reaching the dunes and the clay pan of Deadvlei while the sand is still cool and the Sesriem queues have yet to form. Big Daddy is climbed in the cold early hours. Each of the 23 thatched-and-canvas chalets carries a rooftop platform where staff set out bedrolls for open-air nights.

Swakopmund on the Atlantic Mole

Strand Hotel Swakopmund sits out on the Mole, the historic breakwater pushing into the Atlantic, with water on three sides and waves breaking against the seawall below the balconies. Most of its 125 rooms look over the water. Three restaurants, a beer garden and a beach pavilion line the seafront, and the town centre is a flat five-minute walk away. Morning fog drifts in off the water and burns off by midday.

The Skeleton Coast and Its Wrecks

Shipwreck Lodge stands on the dunes of the Skeleton Coast Central Concession, between the Hoarusib and Hoanib rivers, the only lodge inside the national park. Guests reach it by light aircraft to Möwe Bay and a lodge transfer for the final stretch. Ten timber cabins face the Atlantic, their forms drawn from the wrecks that name this coast. Days are built around the coast, with drives working the dry riverbeds and dune faces and a full-day run south to the Möwe Bay seal colony.

Windhoek and a Quiet Base

Galton House sits in the affluent Eros suburb on the northern edge of Windhoek, about ten minutes from the city centre, behind a gated entrance. Nine rooms gather around a garden courtyard with a water feature, and an upper terrace holds the pool. The mood is unfussy: contemporary interiors, good food and a calm base to lay down luggage and reset. A day room handles the awkward gaps between light-aircraft flights.
