Pioneers Lodge sits on Mahogany Road, in a quiet residential suburb of Victoria Falls, roughly two kilometres from the town centre and about two and a half from the falls themselves. Fifty rooms are arranged low across landscaped grounds, and two swimming pools sit on different levels among the manicured lawns. The main building takes the form of a spacious, airy colonial-style house, its terrace wrapping the walls and looking out over the gardens. Fulvous ducks work the lawns, and the indigenous planting draws birds, butterflies and chameleons through the grounds. A saloon-style bar pours local craft beer brewed with Zambezi water, set alongside a kitchen built on fresh, seasonal produce.

Dinner runs à la carte. Crocodile, warthog sausage and kudu are served alongside Zimbabwean beef, with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options for those who want them. Breakfast is a buffet, and a snack menu covers most of the day between. Afternoons tend to draw guests toward the pools or the lounge, where tea, coffee and something from the kitchen arrive between activities booked out across the wider Victoria Falls area.
Victoria Falls itself is the reason most guests are here, and guided tours of the falls and the adjacent rainforest are the starting point for most stays. From there the Zambezi takes over the day. Sunset cruises pass hippos and elephants coming down to drink, white-water rafting runs the gorges below the falls, and fishing trips work the calmer water upriver. Each is booked directly through the lodge, with transfers arranged, so a stay can be as full or as quiet as a guest chooses.
Wildlife viewing happens off the property, in the parks nearby rather than in the gardens themselves. Game drives and walking safaris run in Victoria Falls National Park and Zambezi National Park, both a short distance away and home to elephant, buffalo, southern white rhino, eland and other antelope, with hippo and Nile crocodile along the river. Horse-riding safaris cover similar ground at a slower pace, and day trips reach Chobe National Park across the border in Botswana.

The Victoria Falls Bridge, a few kilometres away, carries its own set of excursions. Bungee jumping and high-wire activities run from the bridge itself, alongside tours that take in its history spanning the gorge into Zambia. Above the falls, helicopter and microlight flights cover the full width of the water and the gorges downstream in a single pass, a different way of seeing what the ground-level tours reveal only in pieces.

Pioneers Lodge runs largely on solar power, with a generator as backup, and filters its own water to cut single-use plastic, serving room drinking water in thermos flasks. It partners with the Victoria Falls Anti-Poaching Unit, donating five dollars per guest per night toward patrols, animal rescues and conservation education across the Victoria Falls area.

Through Victoria Falls International Airport, which has direct flights from Johannesburg, Cape Town, Harare and Bulawayo and long-haul routes through Addis Ababa and Nairobi. The drive in from the airport takes around twenty-five minutes, and we arrange the transfer so a driver is waiting at arrivals. No small aircraft are involved in reaching the town, so there is no weight limit to pack around and hard suitcases travel happily.
Arriving overland works just as well. The road from Kasane and Botswana's Chobe takes about two hours with the Kazungula border crossing included, and Livingstone airport in Zambia is an alternative around an hour away across the bridge, with its own formalities. Yes, plan for it. Victoria Falls sits at around 900 metres in the Zambezi valley, below the 1,200 metre altitude at which the UK's official travel health advice draws its risk line for Zimbabwe: high from November to June down here, lower through the dry months from July to October. The CDC does not split the seasons at all and recommends antimalarial tablets for the whole country the year round.

Yes, wifi is free and reaches the whole property, rooms included. Staying connected at Pioneers is the easy part of the trip: video calls, photograph backups and the evening's planning all run without ceremony, so if your itinerary saves its remoteness for the camps either side of Victoria Falls, this is the place to deal with home before the quiet begins.
Yes, children of all ages are welcome. Cots can be requested and some rooms take an extra bed for a child under twelve, which stretches the options beyond the four family rooms, and those four are worth claiming early because they are the only ones with a separate sleeping space for the children.
The activities are where ages start to matter, since some of the wilder ones carry minimums of their own, so tell us who is coming and we will build days that everyone can actually join.
The fixed-capacity ones, yes. Helicopter flights over the falls run all year when weather allows, as a twelve to thirteen minute circuit or a twenty-five minute version that adds the gorges, and the seats go fastest from July to October. Devil's Pool takes only small groups inside its season, roughly mid-August to mid-January, and books out further ahead than anything else in town. White-water rafting answers to the river instead: the classic run below the falls operates from around August to December and stops entirely at peak flood in April and May.

For the falls at their loudest, come between March and May, when rain from the Angolan highlands has the Zambezi at full flood; pack a light raincoat, because the spray can be heavy enough to hide the view from the ground. For photographs, the low water of October to early December strips the mist away and opens the gorge, and the Zimbabwean side keeps water over its lip all year even when the Zambian cataracts run dry. June to August sits comfortably between the two, which is why it is the busiest season.
The lodge itself changes character with the calendar. In the October heat, which can push towards 40 degrees in the valley, the pools and the shaded terrace earn their place in the day, while the green season from November to March brings afternoon storms, greener gardens and fewer people at the viewpoints.
