In 2006, Amos Wekesa became the first Ugandan granted permission to build a lodge inside one of the country’s national parks. The first guests at what would become Primate Lodge were hosted in a tented camp, and permanent cottages followed in the years after. That history places a Ugandan-built and Ugandan-led operation at the centre of a forest better known for its primates than its hospitality. It is a sense of belonging that no outside operator could borrow, and it runs through everything from the staff to the food on the table.
Kibale holds one of Africa’s densest concentrations of primates, and chimpanzees are the principal draw, encountered on guided treks led by park rangers rather than from the lodge itself. Closer to home, black-and-white colobus, red-tailed and blue monkeys move through the canopy above the cottages all day long. A little distance from the main camp, the Sky Tree House climbs some ten metres up an enormous tree to look over a clearing visited by colobus and, on occasion, by forest elephants come to feed.
The lodge runs on solar power and is built throughout from local timber, stone and thatch
Activities run on two tracks. Chimpanzee tracking and the longer habituation experience are managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and depart from Kanyanchu, their permit availability and group sizes set by the park. Beyond the chimps, the days fill with guided forest walks and with nocturnal outings in search of bushbabies and pottos. Birders can chase the more than 375 species recorded in Kibale, and the Bigodi Wetland walk, the crater lakes and the tea estates all lie within easy reach.
Wildlife viewing here is done on foot and ranger-guided, inside the forest rather than from a vehicle. It suits guests who want to slow down and read the rainforest rather than tick off a species list. The lodge runs on solar power and is built throughout from local timber, stone and thatch. Its position inside the park, a short walk from the trailhead with forest pressing in on all sides, is the reason to come and the thing that stays with you.
