The Highlands Camp

The Highlands offers travelers an alternative route to experience the Tanzanian wilderness and a refreshing approach to architecture

Community interaction here goes beyond cursory visits. The management has built a symbiotic relationship with the local Maasai population, establishing The Highlands as an excellent base for hiking expeditions in the region. Moreover, the camp serves as an entry point to Olmoti and Empakai Craters, echoing its focus on exclusivity and unconventional experiences. Therefore, it’s an exceptional choice for the traveler interested in beyond-the-ordinary expeditions.

This camp offers various opportunities for engaging with the wilderness of Tanzania, adding dimensions often overlooked when visiting the Ngorongoro Crater. With multiple trails and guided hikes, The Highlands extends its focus beyond conventional safari excursions. It caters to a clientele interested in unique experiences, rather than the typical safari attractions.

Guest Rooms

The Highlands features eight dome-shaped tents, each offering its distinctive experience. A few are equipped with mezzanine floors, while one is specialized for families and another designated as a honeymoon suite. Each tent has its own viewing deck, inviting guests to indulge in bird-watching in a private setting. Inside, the tents house king-size beds, wicker chairs covered with sheepskin next to wood burners, and vinyl windows offering nocturnal views of celestial phenomena.

Activities

The Highlands takes a different approach, emphasizing hiking and localized exploration over the more commonly visited attractions of Ngorongoro Crater. The camp’s activities reflect this, giving visitors a deeper connection to the land around them.

Conservation and Sustainability

The Highlands invests in the Maasai village of Ochaniomelok by providing employment opportunities and fostering economic development. Infrastructure projects such as road construction have had tangible impacts on local life. Moreover, the camp collaborates with the Kamitei Foundation to support the Ochaniomelok Primary School and aims to raise $6500 for the construction of an additional rainwater collection system.
