Explore Calving Season in Serengeti

This journey focuses on a side of the Serengeti that fewer people see. By travelling south during calving season, the safari places guests directly among the herds rather than following them later in the north. The Kusini area in particular offers privacy and a more measured wildlife experience. Combining this with time in the eastern Serengeti ensures balance, as Namiri Plains holds an established reputation for its big cats and wide savannah landscapes.

The itinerary closes at Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of East Africa’s most celebrated wildlife sanctuaries. Here, timing is everything: entering at first light allows guests to avoid the heavier vehicle traffic that builds through the day. By structuring the trip around seasonality, location, and timing, it offers the chance to witness the migration, predator activity, and the high densities of game in Ngorongoro in a way that avoids many of the pressures of mainstream tourism.

Arusha

On arrival in Tanzania guests are transferred by private vehicle to Ngare Sero, a lodge set in lush grounds below Mount Meru. This is a deliberate pause to recover from the long-haul journey, with time to walk in the gardens, watch colobus monkeys in the trees, or sit by the lake where birdlife is abundant. The pace is relaxed, meals are unhurried, and the focus is on adjusting to the rhythm of the country before the safari begins.

Eastern Serengeti

A light aircraft flight carries guests into one of the most remote corners of the park. Namiri Plains sits in a region once closed to tourism, where cheetah research dominated for two decades. The area still offers exceptional predator sightings, with high densities of lion and spotted hyena also present. Game drives are scheduled for early morning and evening when predators are most active, with the possibility of guided walks. If the migration moves more slowly than expected, this eastern location positions guests well to encounter the herds.

Southern Serengeti

Flying further south, the safari continues into Kusini, the focal point of the wildebeest calving season. Hundreds of thousands of animals gather here between January and March, drawing predators such as lion, cheetah, and hyena in large numbers. We suggest private vehicles for maximum flexibility, with early morning drives offering the most striking scenes of predator-prey interaction. Walking safaris may also be possible, providing a different perspective of the plains. Kusini is notably quieter than Ndutu, ensuring a more private experience.

Ngorongoro Crater

The final section takes guests to the rim of Ngorongoro, staying in camp for immediate access at dawn. The Crater is home to one of the highest concentrations of large mammals in Africa, including elephant, buffalo, black rhino, and prides of lion. The grasslands also attract herds of gazelle and zebra, supporting a dynamic predator population. By entering before sunrise, guests encounter the Crater at its calmest, often with mist hanging over the rim. Activities finish by late morning before returning to camp to avoid the busiest hours in the bowl.
