Three things, and they are why this route gives eight nights to private ground.

Inside Serengeti National Park vehicles keep to the tracks, drives finish at dusk, and walking is confined to set areas with an armed park ranger.

On the Grumeti and Mwiba concessions a guide can:

• Leave the track to keep a leopard in view
• Stay out after dark with a spotlight for the animals that only move then
• Walk you out in the morning without that machinery

At Mwiba every booking also comes with its own guide and vehicle, so nobody else decides when you turn for home.

The difference is in how a day runs, not in a longer list of animals, and it is worth most to photographers and to anyone who has done a first safari already.

Three nights beside the park leave room for two outings, and the pairing we would suggest is one gorilla trek and one golden monkey morning.

Permits work the same way for both: one per outing, eight people to a gorilla family each day, an hour once the animals are found, and we secure them before anything else is confirmed.

Golden monkeys live only in this chain of volcanoes and are gentler going, both in the walking and in the hour itself, which you spend watching a troop feed in bamboo instead of sitting quietly with a silverback. The minimum age is 15 for the gorillas and 12 for the monkeys.

A second gorilla trek is the other way to spend that morning, and plenty of people choose it.

It depends on the month, and on rain nobody can forecast a year out.

The herds cross the western corridor on their way north, and that movement is on the reserve's ground between about May and July, June being the likeliest month.

Even then it is a passage and not a residence: they can be there in numbers one week and gone the next, so if the herds are your reason for coming we would build the dates around June and say so plainly.

Grumeti is not empty otherwise. It holds resident lion and leopard, a river with hippo in it, and eastern black rhino, brought back to this ground in 2019 and breeding since, though a few rhino across 350,000 acres makes a sighting a matter of luck.

Two visas, and one piece of paper people forget.

The joint East Africa visa covers Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda, so it does nothing for Tanzania, which issues its own. Apply online before you travel, which is what the British government and Tanzania's own immigration service both advise, even where the airport will still issue a single-entry visa.

The forgotten paper is Zanzibar's. Since October 2024 anyone arriving on the islands from abroad has to buy inbound travel insurance from Zanzibar's own state insurer. A policy from home does not stand in for it, and people without it can be turned away at the airport.

Mwiba runs on private ground with a guide and vehicle for each booking, so the day bends to you: an early walk, a night drive, a long lunch, in whatever order suits.

Springs hold game through the dry months and the broken rocky country suits leopard.

The morning with the Hadza is the part people ask about most. They are among the last hunter-gatherer communities in the region, and the outing is a foraging walk and not a performance.

You go with them as they look for food, follow honeyguide birds to wild hives, and watch a bow, an arrow and a fire made from what is to hand. It asks for an open mind and decent shoes, and the pace is theirs. It suits families with children of four and over.

July, August and September are the strongest months at every point on this route: firm going on the volcanoes, the Serengeti at its best, and the cool, clear season on the Zanzibar coast.

June is the one to weigh if the herds in the western corridor matter to you, since that is usually when they pass, and it rates well everywhere except the plains themselves, which are still filling.

February is a good second window, dry in Rwanda and calm on the coast. April and May are the months to avoid outright, with the long rains inland and the wettest, roughest stretch on the islands.

October suits the Serengeti and the sea as Rwanda turns wetter, while the quieter months buy easier gorilla permits, greener country and fewer vehicles on the reserves.
