  • Between July and October the herds push up from the Serengeti and spread across the plains below the escarpment.

From Nairobi's Park to the Zanzibar Coast

This route links three parts of East Africa across 14 nights. It opens on the southern edge of Nairobi National Park, where black and white rhino move across savannah with the city skyline behind them. It then crosses to a private concession in the western Maasai Mara, below the Oloololo Escarpment, where the rules allow off-road driving and walking. It closes on Zanzibar’s south-east coast, on the Michamvi Peninsula, with reef, lagoon and Swahili history.

You travel by road and light aircraft, with game drives in open and closed vehicles, walks along the escarpment and long days by the Indian Ocean. The lodges are chosen for what each does best: a family-built lodge inside a park at Nairobi, a tented camp on Maasai-owned land in the Mara, and an adults-only clifftop retreat for the coast.

Daily Itinerary Breakdown

Nairobi National Park and the Rhino Plains

Your Kenya safari begins with a game drive before you have left the airport behind, because the transfer into Nairobi National Park runs through the park itself. Over two nights you head out in Land Cruisers for rhino, both black and white, alongside lion, giraffe, zebra and more than 400 recorded bird species, all with the city skyline standing behind the herds. Built into a steep valley above the Mbagathi River, The Emakoko is a family-built lodge of ten suites and a two-bedroom Private House, reached on foot across a wooden footbridge.

The Western Mara Below the Escarpment

You move on to the western Maasai Mara, to a private concession below the Oloololo Escarpment where the reserve's rules end at the gate. Here guides leave the track, spotlight after dark for leopard and honey badger, and walk you through riverine forest towards the Mara River, none of which is allowed inside the reserve. Between July and October the herds push up from the Serengeti and spread across the plains below the escarpment. Kichwa Tembo stands on Maasai-owned land, its canvas rooms rebuilt in 2026 on raised steel platforms, with elephants and giraffes filing behind the rim-flow pool.

  • Accommodation at Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp

Zanzibar's South-East Coast and Reef

From the Mara you fly to Zanzibar, to the Michamvi Peninsula on the island's south-east coast, for nine nights by the Indian Ocean. A reef-protected lagoon below the cliff stays deep enough to swim and snorkel at any state of the tide, a rarity along this coast. Days move between the reef, dhow sailing and the beach, with Stone Town's Swahili history and the Jozani-Chwaka Bay forest within reach. Zawadi Hotel is an adults-only retreat of ocean-front villas above a private cove, its all-inclusive dining built around the daily catch and the hotel's own shamba.
