Ishasha Wilderness Camp

An iconic under canvas safari camp in Queen Elizabeth National Park’s Ishasha sector

The central lounge and dining area, roofed with cool grass thatch, provides a relaxed environment for meals and relaxation, with an option for al fresco dining beside the river. In the evenings, an outdoor fireplace creates a communal space for guests to unwind and share their experiences. The camp’s commitment to a low environmental impact is evident in its use of solar power for lighting and limited power points for recharging electronic devices.

Being within the national park, guests often encounter wildlife like elephants, buffaloes, and various monkey species within the camp itself. Additionally, the camp’s location offers the opportunity to view the area’s famous tree-climbing lions, often found resting in large fig trees. The camp’s attentive staff enhances the experience by ensuring guest safety and comfort amidst this wilderness setting.

Each of Ishasha Wilderness Camp’s ten spacious canvas tents is designed in the East African Meru style, offering a private and intimate ambiance. These tents, equipped with either double or twin beds, feature en suite bathrooms with indoor showers and eco-friendly toilets, all powered by solar energy to minimize environmental impact. Overlooking the beautiful Ntungwe River, the tents come with shadowy verandas and chairs, perfect for river-watching by day and stargazing by night.

Conservation and Sustainability

The camp actively engages in conservation through the Ishasha Community Uplift Project, aimed at conserving bio-diversity and reducing threats to the ecosystem. This project includes supporting local farming communities living adjacent to the park, offering village walks, and selling locally made handicrafts. The camp’s design reflects its commitment to sustainability, utilizing solar power, eco-friendly toilets, and minimizing resource usage. The UCF “elephant trench” initiative, designed to mitigate crop raiding by elephants, is another testament to their dedication to conservation.
