Cormoran Lodge holds a steep, wooded slope above Lake Kivu, a short drive from Kibuye in western Rwanda. Timber cabins are terraced down towards a small private beach. There are no crocodiles here and no hippos, so people swim without a second thought. The water is warm and deepens quickly a few strokes from the sand. The beach and jetty see more use than anywhere else on the property.

Every cabin faces west across open water toward the hills of the Congo, islands scattered between. At dusk the singing of fishermen paddling out for sambaza carries across the water. Sunbirds work the gardens below the decks, and on clear nights guests in the elevated cabin can sometimes make out the red glow of Nyiragongo’s crater burning across the border.
The cabins stand on stilts against the hillside, joined by wooden walkways. Stone steps and rope railings drop through the gardens to the water. Inside, dark local hardwood lines the walls, floors and ceilings, and the bathrooms are finished in stone. Each cabin has a private balcony, a bed under a mosquito net, and the lake laid out in front of it.

Meals are taken in the main lodge at the top of the hill, either indoors by the fireplace or out on the terrace. The kitchen sends out whole grilled tilapia, sambaza fried straight from the lake and rustic beef stews, and breakfast comes as local bananas, yoghurt and Rwandan coffee. When rain closes in over the water, there is a games room with a billiard table, darts and board games.
Volcanoes National Park, where the mountain gorillas live, lies several hours away by road, and Nyungwe Forest has chimpanzees and a canopy walkway. Kibuye sits on Lake Kivu’s eastern shore, and the drive in follows a ridge of terraced hillsides above the water. Guests tend to arrive off a trek with damp kit and no appetite for another dawn start, and a lodge built around swimming rather than game drives does different work. This is a stop between parks rather than a base for exploring one.
Kayaks and canoes go out from the boathouse, and swimmers go straight off the jetty into water that shelves away within a few strokes. A motorboat runs waterskiing and wakeboarding, and trips out to the islands. Napoleon Island, a steep green rise offshore, holds a large colony of fruit bats. The fishing villages strung out along the shore are the other regular destinations. In the late afternoon the boats follow the outrigger canoes out, as the sambaza fishermen light their lanterns and begin their singing across the water.

On land, the hills above the lodge are cut into narrow cultivated terraces, and guided walks lead down through them into the villages around Karongi. The Congo-Nile Trail passes close by for cyclists, and the Gisovu tea estate makes a full day out between the processing sheds and a tasting. The Kibuye genocide memorial is a short ride into town. Closer in, the gardens are dense enough that sunbirds and kingfishers work the trees within sight of the balconies.
Children are welcome, with swings on the beach and the games room at the top of the hill, though the terrain asks for attention: the steps are steep, the drop to the water is considerable, and the beach shelves away quickly, which makes it a difficult fit for toddlers or anyone unsteady on their feet. Evenings settle into something domestic. A fire is lit in the main lodge as the air cools off the lake, dinner is served out on the terrace, and the lamps of the fishing boats spread out across the water far below.

Around seven freestanding timber cabins are terraced down the hillside, in twin and double configurations, including one raised cabin with views over the lake. Each has an en-suite bathroom finished in stone, a private balcony, a mosquito net over the bed, a mini-fridge, Wi-Fi and uninterrupted water views.

Since a solar array went in, the lodge runs at about 98 percent energy self-sufficiency and the diesel generator is now used only occasionally. The rooms are built of local wood on stilts above the shoreline, water is drawn and filtered on site, and staff come from the villages around Karongi.

By road from Kigali, around two hours to two and a quarter to Kibuye on the western shore of Lake Kivu, on a road that winds through the hills the whole way. There is no airstrip used for standard access.
The drive is genuinely scenic rather than a chore, and it is usually built as a leg between Volcanoes National Park and the lake. We arrange the vehicle and driver with the booking.
Yes. Both TravelHealthPro, the UK's official travel health service, and the CDC treat the whole of Rwanda as a malaria risk area and recommend antimalarial tablets wherever in the country you stay. No part of Rwanda is exempt, and altitude alone is not a reason to skip them.
Most stays here sit inside a wider Rwandan itinerary, so confirm precautions for the full route with a travel clinic or your doctor rather than for one stop. Cover up against bites after dark whatever they advise.
There is no age restriction, but be realistic about the setting. The cabins stand on stilts on a wooded hillside, the paths between them are steep, and the lake is right there, so it suits older children, roughly eight and up, far better than toddlers.
If you are travelling with young children and want Lake Kivu, say so at enquiry and we will suggest somewhere with flatter ground and a beach that is easier to supervise.
Warm and pleasant by the lake the year round, milder than the altitude suggests, with more rain during Rwanda's wet seasons and sunnier weather through the middle and later parts of the year.
Bring a light waterproof, because showers arrive quickly in the hills, plus a warm layer for the evenings, comfortable shoes with grip for the steep paths, swimwear for the lake, and sun protection. The lake is clean and safe to swim in, which is a large part of why people come.
June to September and January to February are the most dependable for sunshine and for time on the water, and June, July and August are usually the pick.
The wet seasons bring greener hills and far fewer visitors, and the rain tends to come in bursts rather than all day. Since Lake Kivu is normally the restful end of a Rwandan trip rather than its purpose, we generally place the dates around the gorilla trekking and let the lake follow.
