This nine-night journey through Uganda focuses on the country’s great apes, linking the forests of Kibale, Bwindi, and Mgahinga. Kibale holds Africa’s highest density of chimpanzees, Bwindi’s steep ridges shelter gorilla families, and Mgahinga, the smallest park, has a single habituated gorilla group.
A private driver-guide accompanies you throughout, with light aircraft flights and vehicle transfers between regions. Early morning treks led by expert trackers form the core of each stay, with afternoons free for crater lakes, community visits, or volcanic slopes. Lodges sit in areas of ecological importance, from Hotel No 5 in Entebbe to Mt Gahinga Lodge.
Arrive in Entebbe and transfer privately to Hotel No 5, set in a quiet neighbourhood. This first day is designed for rest after long-haul travel, adjusting to Uganda’s rhythm. Depending on arrival time, guests may enjoy the gardens, pool, or a walk along Lake Victoria’s edge. The evening provides a gentle introduction before beginning the primate-focused journey.
Fly west to Kasese and continue by road to Kibale Lodge. Early starts take you into Kibale National Park, home to Africa’s highest density of chimpanzees. Tracking involves observing troop dynamics, feeding behaviour, and vocal communication in the forest canopy. Afternoons allow for exploration of crater lakes, community walks, or birdwatching in an area renowned for forest species such as the green-breasted pitta.
Fly south into Bwindi’s remote southern sector, staying at Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge. Mornings are devoted to gorilla tracking, which can involve strenuous hikes across ridges and valleys. This region’s steep terrain supports a rich assemblage of birdlife and primates beyond gorillas. Afternoons are at leisure, with options to visit local communities or simply take in views stretching into the Virunga chain.
Transfer by road to Mt Gahinga Lodge, bordering Uganda’s smallest but most secluded gorilla park. With only one habituated group, encounters here are highly focused and often more intimate. Beyond gorilla tracking, guests may hike the volcanic slopes or learn about the Batwa community who once lived in the forest. Three nights provide time to engage deeply with this unique landscape before departure.

Fitzroy are true specialists in accessing the wilderness. They know where to go and importantly, when to go there. Highly recommended.
