Seasonal Guide: Zimbabwe
The best time to visit Zimbabwe for a safari is during the dry season, from May to October, both in terms of wildlife viewing, but also for comfort. During this period, vegetation is thinner, and visibility is better, providing optimal conditions for wildlife viewing. The weather is cooler and more comfortable for activities. The dry season also coincides with the best time to visit Victoria Falls, as reduced water levels from August to December offer clearer views of the falls.

January
January in Zimbabwe marks the peak of the wet season, with heavy rainfall transforming the landscape. This is an excellent time for bird watching, as migratory species arrive, and the parks, especially Hwange and Mana Pools, are alive with avian activity. However, the heavy rains can make access to certain areas challenging, and some lodges may temporarily close. The high water levels at Victoria Falls create a thunderous spectacle, though the mist can sometimes limit visibility.
February
February continues the wet season trend in Zimbabwe, with lush landscapes and abundant birdlife. Despite being one of the wettest months, it offers unique opportunities to witness newborn wildlife in parks like Gonarezhou and Hwange. The challenges of accessing some regions remain, and visibility at Victoria Falls can still be affected by spray. Safari enthusiasts should be prepared for potentially challenging conditions and understand that some accommodations may be inaccessible.
March
March sees the end of the wet season in Zimbabwe, with rainfall beginning to decrease. The landscape remains green and full of life, offering spectacular scenic beauty and continued excellent birdwatching opportunities. Wildlife viewing begins to improve as animals start to congregate around dwindling water sources. Victoria Falls remains impressively full, but as the month progresses, the mist and spray decrease slightly, improving visibility.
April
April marks the transition from the wet to the dry season in Zimbabwe. The landscape starts to dry out, improving access to parks like Mana Pools and Matobo Hills. This month offers a balance of still-lush vegetation and increasing wildlife visibility. Victoria Falls is at its most voluminous, offering breathtaking views, albeit with significant mist.
May
May heralds the start of the optimal safari season in Zimbabwe, with dryer conditions and cooler temperatures. Wildlife viewing becomes increasingly rewarding as animals gather around waterholes, especially in Hwange National Park. The vegetation begins to thin out, improving visibility. Victoria Falls’ water levels start to recede, reducing mist and allowing clearer views of the falls.
June
June in Zimbabwe sees the land continue to dry out, enhancing conditions for wildlife spotting in national parks. The weather is cooler, particularly in the mornings and evenings, making safari activities more comfortable. Victoria Falls’ water flow continues to decrease, allowing for better visibility and more activities around the falls, such as rafting.
July
July is one of the best months for a safari in Zimbabwe, with cool temperatures and minimal rainfall. Wildlife viewing is excellent across all major parks, as animals are more reliant on permanent water sources. The visibility at Victoria Falls improves significantly, offering spectacular views with less mist.
August
August in Zimbabwe offers prime safari conditions, with dry weather and excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. The reduced vegetation and concentration of animals around water sources make this an ideal time for game viewing. Victoria Falls remains a key attraction, with more exposed rock faces and the possibility of exploring the falls’ base.
September
September sees temperatures begin to rise in Zimbabwe, but the safari experience remains outstanding. The dry landscape maximizes wildlife viewing opportunities, especially in Hwange and Mana Pools, where elephants and predators are more visible. Victoria Falls’ lower water levels offer unique perspectives and access to Devil’s Pool.
October
October is the hottest month in Zimbabwe, with high temperatures challenging but rewarding for dedicated safari-goers. The scarcity of water draws large concentrations of wildlife to available water sources, creating exceptional viewing opportunities. However, the heat can be intense, and Victoria Falls is at its lowest flow, revealing much of the rock face.
November
November nomrally brings the onset of the rains in Zimbabwe, transforming the landscape and dispersing wildlife. This month can offer dramatic skies and the chance to see the first rains rejuvenate the parched earth. Wildlife viewing remains good early in the month but decreases as animals move away from waterholes and accesibility can become a problem. Victoria Falls begins to swell again, but visibility is still good.
December
December in Zimbabwe is characterized by intermittent rains and a return to lush, green landscapes. This is a quieter time for safari, with fewer visitors and a focus on birdlife and the lush scenery. Wildlife viewing is still possible, though animals are more dispersed and many camps and lodges remain closed to visitors. Victoria Falls gradually increases in flow, offering a preview of the coming wet season.
