Best Time To Visit Uganda

Seasonal Guide: Uganda

The best time to visit Uganda is during its two dry seasons: December to February and June to August. These periods are ideal for gorilla tracking in the misty Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and wildlife spotting in the savannah reserves. However, photographers may prefer the wetter months as the overcast skies lead to preferable lighting conditions. Rain adds a luscious green hue to the landscape and offers less contrast, making for vibrant shots. Additionally, gorillas, with their glistening wet fur, present a striking spectacle in the rain.

January

January is one of the drier months, excellent for gorilla tracking in Bwindi and game viewing in national parks like Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls. Wildlife, especially around the Nile banks, is easier to spot. However, expect occasional rain showers. The Rwenzori Mountains’ trails remain navigable, and Karamoja’s landscapes are brilliantly golden.

February

Another optimal month for wildlife enthusiasts. As water sources dwindle, animals cluster around the remaining ones, providing great spotting opportunities. The sunlit grasslands shimmer, and the Rwenzori Mountains are still good for trekking. However, be prepared for sporadic rain in southern Uganda.

March

The beginning of the long rainy season. Landscapes transform to a deep green, making it a picturesque time for photographers. While this means thicker vegetation, making wildlife harder to spot, the dramatic waterfalls in Murchison Falls National Park are at their most impressive.

April

One of the wettest months, roads can be challenging, and some lodges close. Yet, this is when the gorillas of Bwindi look their most majestic amidst misty forests. Rwenzori treks are muddier but the challenge is rewarding for the adventurous.

May

May sees diminishing rains, offering vibrant landscapes and improved wildlife viewing. Gorilla tracking in Bwindi remains good, however the dense foliage and potentially damp trails could be challenging. Birding is is in its prime, benefiting from the season’s richness.

June

With the rains receding, this marks the start of Uganda’s second dry spell. It’s the best time for gorilla tracking and wildlife viewing, especially in the Ishasha sector, where tree-climbing lions are a highlight.

July

Possibly the best month for a Ugandan safari. Clear skies, fewer mosquitoes, and vibrant wildlife make national parks come alive. The temperature remains cool, especially in the high-altitude areas, making treks enjoyable.

August

Continuing the trend of dry, clear days, it’s an ideal time to visit the Karamoja region, which showcases its cultural festivals. Meanwhile, gorilla tracking remains prime, and the Nile River offers exciting rafting opportunities.

September

A transitional month, with the short rainy season approaching. It’s still a good time to visit, with mild weather and slightly fewer tourists, offering a more intimate experience.

October

The short rains begin, revitalizing Uganda’s landscapes. While this might affect gorilla trekking in Bwindi due to slippery trails, birdwatchers will delight in the migratory species making their appearance.

November

A wet month, but the rain breathes life into the parched landscapes. The vivid greenery makes it a photographer’s delight, and birdwatching continues to peak. However, pack appropriately for muddy conditions.

December

As rains subside, Uganda welcomes the festive season with clearer skies. An excellent time for mountain treks and exploring the lush, rejuvenated landscapes. The Kidepo Valley, a gem in the north, becomes particularly accessible, revealing its raw, unspoiled beauty.
