June to October, the long dry season.
Those months are clear and warm by day with cool evenings at 1,400 metres, and they line up with the best months across the whole northern circuit, so the dates suit the trip rather than just the town.
June and July mornings are genuinely cold.
January and February are hot and mostly dry, and the other good window.
March to May are the long rains and the wettest stretch.
In town the rain falls in heavy bursts and drains away. What it affects is the parks you are flying or driving to, and the light aircraft, which can be delayed.
November and December bring the short rains, which clear quickly.
We plan the dates around the Serengeti and the crater rather than around Arusha, and treat the town nights as the bookends they are.
Cooler than people expect of Tanzania, and the altitude is why.
Evenings and early mornings need a jumper all year, and June to August can be genuinely cold at dawn with grey skies until mid-morning. Days are warm rather than hot.
Mount Meru holds cloud for much of the year, which keeps the town fresh.
Pack a light jacket for the evenings and keep the safari clothes for the parks, which are hotter.
July and August, and again around Christmas.
Those are the peak months for the northern circuit and for climbing Kilimanjaro, so the hotels fill and the light aircraft run back to back. January and February are nearly as good and noticeably quieter.
