The bush thins, the seasonal water dries and the game concentrates along the Rufiji and its lakes, which is where the boats are. September and October are the peak, and the hottest.
June and July are cooler and already very good.
If the wild dogs are your reason for coming, the denning months from about June to August are the ones to book.
March to May, yes, if you have a choice.
Those are the long rains, when the tracks become difficult, the game spreads out and many camps close completely. The park effectively shuts for the wettest weeks.
January and February are a different matter: hot, green, quiet and perfectly workable.

As the land dries the animals come to the Rufiji to drink, so a boat puts you alongside elephant, hippo and crocodile with no engine noise and no dust. The water level is also easier to navigate.
The boats run in the green months too, with the game more scattered.

The short green window is hot and lush, with newborn plains game, superb birding, low rates and almost nobody there. The game is more spread out but the river still works.

So there is a good green season here and a bad one, and the difference between them matters.
June to October, when the southern and northern circuits are both dry.
That window suits Nyerere, Ruaha and the Serengeti at once, and the coast as well, so one set of dates carries a whole trip. The flights connect through Dar es Salaam.
March to May is the weakest across the country.
