June to October, and again in January and February.
Those are the dry spells, when the game concentrates on the rivers and the springs, the walking is easy underfoot and the tracks are firm. June to October is the longer and more reliable window.
January and February are hot, dry and much quieter.
Because so much here happens on foot or on a camel, the dry ground matters more than it would on a driving safari.
April and May, yes, if you have a choice.
They bring the heaviest rain of the year, the dry riverbeds run, the tracks turn to mud and some camps close. The country greens up spectacularly and the birding is excellent.
March is the hinge month, often dry at the start.
If your dates are fixed then, we will tell you plainly what you are trading and which camps stay open.
Hot, and hotter than most people plan for.
Days sit regularly in the low to mid thirties, with the peak in January, February and again in September and October. Nights are milder than the highlands, so you need very little for the evenings.
The middle of the day is genuinely uncomfortable, which is why the camps have plunge pools and long lunches.
Pack light, breathable, neutral clothes, strong sun protection and a hat you will actually wear.
The dry months, June to October and January to February.
Firm ground, cool mornings and predictable water make a long walk or a multi-day camel trek enjoyable rather than an endurance test. Those are also the months when the tracking is most productive.
In the rains the riverbeds can run and a route may have to change on the day.
If you are coming to trek, tell us early: the good guides and camel strings are limited and they book out.
November and December, and again in the green weeks of April and May.
The short rains bring migrants down and the resident dry-country species into breeding colour. The riverine strips and the springs hold most of them, so a morning on foot with a Samburu guide beats a drive.
