Singita Malilangwe House

A house for one party of ten on a sandstone ridge above Malilangwe Dam, on the edge of Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe.

Country: Zimbabwe
Location: Gonarezhou & Malilangwe
Number of rooms: 5

Black and white rhino, one morning

Ray Sparrow ran cattle here from 1949, on a property he called Lone Star Ranch. Drought after drought convinced him the ground suited wildlife better than livestock, and in 1985 he began converting it. The American investor and philanthropist Paul Tudor Jones II funded the purchase in 1994 and established the Malilangwe Trust, which has held the land ever since.

Elephants bathe in the lake directly below the pool deck.

Singita Malilangwe House stands alone on a sandstone ridge within the reserve, taken by one party of up to ten guests, with its own field guide, tracker, chef, butler and vehicle, so the day runs on your schedule. Elephants bathe in the lake directly below the pool deck. Breeding herds come down through the woodland in the last hours of light, and fish eagles call across the water.

Cécile & Boyd and GAPP Architects drew the house from red sandstone, dead leadwood and thatch, its thick curved walls nodding to Shangaan pattern-making. A 2019 rebuild opened the interiors onto the decks; in the master bathroom a glass panel drops away and the shower opens to the cliff air. Brass and woven leather warm the earth-toned rooms.

Crocodiles and hippos hold the lake below the ridge.

Red sandstone hills and granite boulders give way to mountain acacia woodland and riverine forest along the Chiredzi River, with baobabs standing over all of it. Crocodiles and hippos hold the lake below the ridge. Both black and white rhino live here in numbers that make tracking either species in one morning a reasonable plan, and wild dogs and cheetahs work the open ground while sable and roan feed in the woodland. The bird list includes fourteen eagles.
