Limited Expedition:

Tanzania: Hiking and Wildlife of The Great Rift

The intention has been to keep the journey as dynamic as possible, with variety being the key, whilst at the same time ensuring that the prime wildlife areas are visited. As such we have included often overlooked elements which, when combined with your wider itinerary, will make the journey as a whole more satisfying and informative.

Combining trekking across a chain of extinct volcanoes, exploring the floor of the famous Ngorongoro Crater and a private mobile camp in an exclusive wilderness zone in Serengeti, we can ensure this is one of the fines ways to explore Tanzania.

Great Rift Valley

Depart Arusha for a multi day hike that in many ways will complement your time exploring the more well-known areas of The Great Rift Valley. This is one of the more “off grid” options to consider when visiting Tanzania, and for that exact reason is why it would merit its inclusion. Few people will ever have the experience of following a section of The Great Rift Valley, through the range of habitats and landscapes on offer, a truly one off experience.

  • Breakfast in our lodge, lunch, dinner at camp
  • Accommodation in a simple lightweight camp

Empakai to Leonotis

Dawn rises and our lofty position affords a great sunrise. As we take breakfast our crew break camp and depart to send the forward team ahead with donkeys. We then set off hiking with Maasai guides following a route that takes us through picturesque Maasai villages and rolling hills. Lunch can be taken on route as a picnic or if guests are very fit a late lunch can be had in camp. In the late afternoon a hike up to a nearby viewpoint is highly recommended and a great place for sun downers!

  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner in camp

Hike to Lake Natron

The final section of hiking has two options of a shorter hike or a longer more strenuous option right along the rift wall. The views are spectacular with the active volcano Oldoinyo Lengai dominating the foreground. This volcano affects almost everything from hydrology to lifestyle, as will become apparent. Once down on the rift valley floor we are picked up and transferred to Lake Natron Camp, Ngare Sero and here have the chance to jump in the natural pools to cool down. Sun downers are served at any number of beautiful points close to camp.

Ngorongoro Crater

After breakfast you can do some additional activities before departure and picnic lunches are provided to ensure you reach your destination well fed.

Instantly recognisable as one of the most iconic destinations in African travel. Ngorongoro Crater is in essence a large collapsed volcano full of wildlife. Due to the fertile nature of the soil in this area life flourishes in all its forms. Best enjoyed by making the earliest start possible and being among the first visitors to the crater floor. Doing so shows the crater as it should be seen, in relative exclusivity.

Serengeti National Park

Occupying a small area of Southern Serengeti is the exclusive wilderness zone that we are able to operate in. Access to this area is restricted and as such it offers a far more exclusive safari experience than might be found in central Serengeti for example.

The far reaching plains of Southern Serengeti are as iconic as it gets for the quintessential African safari and match many people’s expectations of what ‘safari’ looks like. Wildlife here is plentiful including excellent sightings of big cats and large mammals. Another benefit of being in this area is the ability to engage in longer walking safaris than you would find elsewhere in the park.

Highlights

Some of the amazing things you’ll experience

Meet Your Guide

Joan Riera spent his childhood between contrasting lives in both west Africa and Spain’s Catalan region. This unique combination led him to study anthropology at London’s Richmond University, part of a journey that has led him to continue his studies of traditional African cultures, and to become one of the best experts available on the region today.

It is this unique childhood and academic background that enables Joan to both understand and importantly, empathise with, indigenous cultures whilst his infectious personality enables him to operate as a guide. It would be fair to say, it is the fact that he did not train specifically as a guide that makes him such a great one.

Whilst I have traveled to Africa many times before, this was the first experience for my family. It was without a doubt the best family trip we have taken to date. Paul took the time to point us in the direction of areas of Tanzania that we would not have found otherwise, the operation was perfect from arrival to departure.
