Limited Expedition:

Tanzania: Great Migration Safari

During this safari to Northern Tanzania you will have the opportunity to explore one of the most famed wildlife areas of Africa, varying your time between exploring the parks on foot, by bicycle and via traditional game drive. This is important, far too often people spend all their time in the back of a game drive vehicle, whilst this is an excellent way to view wildlife in close proximity it is by adding variety of experience that your time on safari is engaging and interesting, allowing time to observe the smaller and less obvious species and to truly feel our place in the complex mosaic of life here.

After the sun has set we can enjoy a night drive, where a change of shift takes place among the species of the park and the nocturnal species take over, favouring the cover of darkness for either safety or stealth.

Ngorongoro Highlands

This morning we will leave our lakeside location, our destination being the Ngorongoro Highlands are of the wider Serengeti eco-system. On our way to this contrasting area of northern Tanzania there will be the opportunity to enjoy a walk along an elevated walkway through the canopy of the forest, offering yet another differing perspective of this unique area. The village of Mto Wa Mbu offers a chance to understand how local agriculture exists alongside the wildlife populations of the area, and in the late afternoon we will arrive at our camp on the slops of an extinct volcano.

Ngorongoro To Serengeti

Another early start this morning, as we climb the side of Ngorongoro Crater and descend into the crater floor itself, a famous geological feature of The Great Rift Valley, that has burst into life due to the nutrient rich volcanic soil in the area. With resident year-round wildlife such as lion, elephant, zebra and even rhino, Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most celebrated single wildlife areas in Africa, and with good reason. After a lunch on the crater floor itself, we will continue by road into Serengeti National Park for the evening.

After enjoying a cooked breakfast round the campfire this morning, we will enjoy a game drive from our camp in central Serengeti and make our way north, to a remote area of the park, dedicated to exploring on foot, doing so affords us the opportunity to enjoy the national park from a different perspective. Staying in a simple and lightweight tented camp, designed to offer comfort but also a connection to the wilderness we are here to visit, it is moments like these that are often the standout moments for many guests during a visit to the wilder corners of Serengeti.

Today is dedicated exclusively to walking in this remote area of northern Serengeti. Under the supervision of some of the most highly trained and experienced guides in the country, you are able to explore as nature intended, whilst sharpening your senses free from the noise of a 4WD vehicle to distract you. We would expect to see along our route, herds of elephant, big cats, wildebeest and other antelope species. A picnic lunch will be enjoyed under the shade of a tree, simple but satisfying before we continue our walk by returning to the walking camp for the night.

Following another campfire breakfast, we will make our way west via a game drive, the exact time of this is entirely dependent on the wildlife viewing opportunities along the way, and as such no firm itinerary is in place, or necessary. The intention on this day is drive deep into the heart of Serengeti’s northern eco-system, close to the border with Kenya’s Maasai Mara, among the herds of wildebeest as they make their way north in search of the grazing that drives their annual migratory routes. Arriving at our comfortable camp in the late afternoon in time for a satisfying meal under the stars.

Meet Your Guide

Joan Riera spent his childhood between contrasting lives in both west Africa and Spain’s Catalan region. This unique combination led him to study anthropology at London’s Richmond University, part of a journey that has led him to continue his studies of traditional African cultures, and to become one of the best experts available on the region today.

It is this unique childhood and academic background that enables Joan to both understand and importantly, empathise with, indigenous cultures whilst his infectious personality enables him to operate as a guide. It would be fair to say, it is the fact that he did not train specifically as a guide that makes him such a great one.

Tanzania was our first safari but won't be the last, camping and walking in this area was as far removed from our day to day life as we could imagine, a really incredible experience and one we intend to try again.
