Limited Expedition:

Gabon: Forest Primates of West Africa

Gabon is a truly wonderful country, utterly unique in so many ways and owing its relatively untouched wilderness areas to the extreme wealth that has been generated by the oil industry. The success of which has left the wild interior free from exploitation, a rare luxury these days, sadly.

The itinerary is varied, by design, taking time to visit the rain forests and waterways of Loango where we will track the lowland gorillas twice, and the savannah and mountains of Lope National Park. During our time in Lope National Park, we will join the researchers monitoring the local mandrill population, tracking them with radio collars and spending time among them in the forest.

Night train to Lope

Today we will take the opportunity to explore some of Libreville, to pick up any last-minute supplies required before we travel into the forest, and to take care of any last-minute admin.

In the evening, we will board the night train to Lope, travelling in the first-class compartment. The train is relatively comfortable, if the air conditioning a little fierce. We will arrive at our destination in the early hours of the morning, where we will take a short road transfer to Lope Hotel in the national park.

Lope National Park

After disembarking the train we will take a short road transfer to Lope National Park, arriving at the simple, but comfortable lodge in the early hours of the morning.

As well as a variety of plains game, one of the signature species in Lope is the mandrill, found here in huge numbers. At one time a single group of 1,350 individuals was recorded here, but it has since split into two, possibly due to the presence of leopard in the area. During our stay here, we will track the only habituated mandrill group anywhere in Africa, alongside the research team that are based in the park to study them.

  • Breakfast in camp, lunch and dinner in our lodge

Heading back to the capital, and making use again of Gabon’s comfortable night train, we will arrive back at Libreville in the early hours of the morning. Given our arrival time back into the city we have no firm plans for the day, with many guests choosing to relax in the comfortable grounds of our hotel.

For those that wish to of course, there will be plenty of opportunities to get out and explore the city, join in a game of football on the nearby beach or if we are lucky, to witness a Bwiti ceremony nearby.

Loango National Park

Following a very short flight to Port Gentil, and a road transfer of around two hours we will arrive in Loango National Park.

Our time in Loango will be split between a permanent lodge on the outskirts of the park and a private camp located further into the forest itself.

Doing so provides us with access to the wide range of eco-systems found here, exploring on foot and by boat, we are likely to encounter hippo, forest elephant, forest buffalo, sitatunga and lowland gorilla. Chimpanzee are also present in the park, and on occasion they can be seen, however getting close to the chimps is extremely challenging.

  • Breakfast in our simple homestay, lunch and dinner at our camp
  • Accommodation in Loango Lodge and Akaka Camp

Return to Libreville

Today we depart Loango via an off-road transfer, in time for lunch in Port Gentil.

We will then board a short flight of around 30 minutes to return us to Libreville in order to connect with our flights home.

This was my fourth time visiting Africa, each one as memorable as the last. I will continue to return and continue to find new places to visit, despite only ever planning to come once many years ago.
